I'm delighted to have been invited by the PM to conduct a review into meeting our Net Zero commitments in the most economically-efficient way.
I'm committed to ensuring we continue to lead the world in our Net Zero plans in a way that is pro-business and pro-growth 1/2

For millennia, humans have used more and more land for agriculture, taking over wild habitats.
But, we are at a unique point in history: agricultural land use has peaked.

Making the @IEA's global data on energy open access is a no brainer for climate change (see ourworldindata.org/iea-open-… by @_HannahRitchie & @MaxCRoser) but needs member states to ask it do so. In UK, tell Greg Hands [email protected] you support this, example emails at that link

Carbon credits are not offsets. It sounds obvious, but to many, both critics of offsetting, and supporters of carbon credits, I don't think it is.

Big news: recent CO2 emissions have been revised notably downward in the just-released @gcarbonproject dataset. The revisions – due to a major reassessment of land-use – suggest emissions have likely been flat rather than increasing over past decade: carbonbrief.org/global-co2-e… 1/19

#COP26 is winding down, but Carbon Gap is just getting started! We launched on Nov 7th with a day of events at the Climate Action Solutions Centre, bringing together 70+ delegates - many meeting in person for the first time - to craft a vision for #carbonremoval’s path to scale.

1/6 Today, we'll explain what #CDR actually is (and what it is not). With this, it should be easy to distinguish real CDR from the fake solutions.🕵️♂️🕵️♀️

We’re hearing from @EliMLarson today from Oxford Uni on net zero aligned carbon offsetting. Their principles are “calling our collective bluff” - if we are committed to net zero we need to shift to carbon removal.

Many ways to handle permanence: assigning carbon stock steward who must re-store carbon in event of leakage (@MargrietKuijper), buffer pools (ugh), ton-year to ton conversion (@MaxNova90 @zackparisa), and fascinating age-weighted idea from @BrendaEkwurzel #clubhouse event anyone?

"..covering 1% of emissions in 2023, rising to covering 10% in 2030 and 100% of emissions in 2050, to ensure that net zero is achieved on target." (see 3.4)

One surprising & pernicious manifestation of this: recently discovered fossil resources in Global South (e.g. Tanzania, Guyana). They justifiably want to convert this mineral wealth into financial wealth, but struggle to get mainstream financing as Euro firms divest.
