In 1910, two little boys rode their horses nearly 2,000 miles from Oklahoma to New York City. One was 10 years old. The other was SIX. But how they got home is even harder to believe. Meet Bud and Temple Abernathy, two young brothers from Frederick, Oklahoma, whose childhood adventures sound like something straight out of a Hollywood movie. With no adults riding beside them, they crossed rivers, endured rough weather, and traveled for weeks on horseback. Their destination? New York City, where former President Theodore Roosevelt was returning from his travels. By the time they arrived, the boys had become celebrities. They even participated in Roosevelt's homecoming parade! But here's the part I absolutely love. Instead of riding their horses back, they shipped them home by train, got themselves a little Brush automobile, and DROVE back to Oklahoma! Their father followed in a separate car. And apparently, that wasn't enough adventure. The following year, the brothers rode from New York to San Francisco in just 62 days. Today, a statue in their Oklahoma hometown honors their extraordinary journeys. Imagine being six years old and having a cross-country horseback adventure AND a road trip under your belt.
