Here's some news. For those who like that sort of thing, in the next few weeks I'll be publishing a new book of short stories, titled "Deep Waters: Ten More Tales from Norfolk and Beyond" — slightly eerie stories, full of a sense of place, and alert to the deep currents of history flowing everywhere around us.

Barack Obama at his last press briefing with reporters, 2017: "I have enjoyed working with all of you. That does not, of course, mean that I've enjoyed every story that you have filed, but that's the point of this relationship. You're not supposed to be sycophants. You're supposed to be skeptics. You're supposed to ask me tough questions. You're not supposed to be complimentary, but you're supposed to cast a critical eye on folks who hold enormous power."

This scene in "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1949) where 6 members of the D'Ascoyne's family, all played by Sir Alec Guinness, are seen together, took 2 days to film. The camera was set on a specially built platform to minimize movement. In addition, the camera operator spent the night with the camera to ensure that nothing moved it by accident. A frame with six black matte painted optical flat glass windows was set in front of the camera, and the windows opened one at a time so each of the characters could be filmed in turn. The film was then wound back for the next character. Most of the time was spent waiting for Guinness to be made up as the next character. (Source: IMDb) P.S: 1) On this day, 77 years ago, Robert Hamer's "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1949) premiered in London, U.K. 2) Remembering the great British actor, Dennis Price, on his 111th birthday!

John Eric Bartholomew, AKA Eric Morecambe, was born 100 years ago today. Few people in history have made as many people laugh as Eric, and as someone whose life was dedicated to that purpose, I am sure it is an accolade he would have been incredibly proud of. For me, Eric’s brilliance lay not just in the laughter he created, but in the anticipation of the laughter to come. That gift was omnipresent, following him like a comedic halo. To see him was to smile instinctively, followed quickly by genuine laughter. His friend Tommy Cooper possessed that same rare quality, and I have many treasured memories of watching them both when I was young. Thanks to social media, Eric’s work continues to be enjoyed by millions worldwide every day, and appreciation for his immense talent only grows. Long may that continue. Here he is, with Ernie and Mr Preview, creating some 22 karat TV comedy gold. God bless Eric Morecambe x

There is no military objective that justifies the wholesale destruction of a society's infrastructure or the deliberate infliction of suffering on civilian populations. Conflicts end when leaders choose dialogue over destruction, @antonioguterres says. news.un.org/en/story/2026/04…

At one point, this was the extent of the fire at the vape shop in Union Street in Glasgow. CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW IT WENT FROM THIS TO THE ENTIRE CORNER OF UNION STREET AND GORDON STREET COLLAPSING AND BURNING DOWN??!
I can't believe my eyes here. How has this fire, which apparently started in a vape shop on Union Street, spread to this extent??

This is genuinely extraordinary: nitter.gq/MicloutT/status/202944… Speaking is General Sir Richard Shirreff, NATO's former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He says that the UK "should not, in any way, shape or form be involved with the Americans because they are being led by a couple of gung-ho nutters like Trump and Hegseth without a proper strategy and without serious thought about what the end state for this war is." He goes on: "Yet again we have an American president who has gone to war, a war of choice, a war of hubris frankly, without ANY [the emphasis is his] clear idea of how the war ends and without any clear strategy." He predicts that "this thing is going to go south very, very quickly." He highlights in particular just how foolish it was to kill Ayatollah Khamenei: "The idea of assassinating the Ayatollah Khamenei who was not just Iran's head of state but he was the religious symbol for Shiites worldwide. Assassinating him during the month of Ramadan is about as subtle as murdering the Pope on the steps of St Peter's in Holy Week. It will inflame the Shiite world and what you're doing by doing that is probably pushing large numbers of Iranians who might have been reconcilable, who might have thought about rising up, back into the fold of the irreconcilable."
