ALT Staff goals, challenges, and use of student inquiry in undergraduate bioscience teaching laboratories by Emily Coyte. Teaching laboratory sessions are unique, ubiquitous yet understudied aspects of bioscience curricula. But what goals do staff have for them? In these active spaces, to what extent do students make experimental decisions (i.e. student inquiry) versus following instructions? What challenges constrain staff goal achievement? Through staff questionnaires and interviews, this study develops a cross-institutional picture across UK bioscience teaching labs.

ALT Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many institutions have moved to online time-limited examinations as a final assessment and away from the traditional face-to-face invigilated (proctored) examinations (Grajek 2020; UNESCO 2020). The guidance document presented here aims to support academics in the writing of questions for time-limited online assessments. A variety of question types and strategies are offered to address higher-order thinking skills in relation to the students' understanding, application, analysis, and creativity. For this document, we use an adaption of Allan’s (2020) understanding of online exams to be: “high-stakes summative assessment events, mediated by digital technologies, often taking place in a defined place or time, under conditions allowing access to course materials, notes or communication” (Allan 2020 p 1)

ALT Front page of the website that contains the date 6th and 7th of September 2022, the title, Bioscience education Summit 2022, and location Cardiff University of the event. The info is on a background of a academic looking backwards at a projector screen. There is a strapline in a red box at the bottom that reads A two-day summit of talks and networking opportunities.
