Wordpress co-founder says they patched the PHP vulnerabilities and the site had no downtime
Replying to @joshbrown @Cloudflare
At @automattic we invest deeply in security, so your @WordPress doesn't have rough days, our shield was up just like Cloudflare, and even better everything was patched on @WordPressdotcom @Pressable and @WordPressVIP , who didn't have a second of downtime.

Some stats on #php2shell. In the 10 hours before it was publicly announced, across the @Cloudflare network we saw thousands of attempts to exploit it. That jumped to tens of thousands in the 45 minutes post announcement, hundreds of thousands within 2 hours, and millions now.

An update from Brewster Kahle on today's outage.

ALT Internet Archive ops staff were heroes last night. PHP vulnerability announced, soon saw attacks, isolated the vulnerability, used Claude to make fixes for our older php versions, used local models to run simulated attacks, deployed. reinforced WAF and other guards. Offline briefly, Back on new versions and running! Given the severity, there are heroes in many many orgs from last night. Could have been no lights, no traffic signals, real problems. Heroes. Thank you all.
Archive.org is currently offline. We are working to restore service now.

The court filings on the fired OpenAI engineer reveal a lot more about the case, including his one-way flight, what the feds found in his house+phone, his browser history (including a folder called “Saudi Gov Docs”), and more.
Here’s the latest from me and @FortuneMagazine’s Wen Shao, who was in the courtroom today. Alfozan was wearing a jail-issued orange jumpsuit and a face mask.

Alien encounter
We discovered and communicated with a Chinese AI agent fleet. We believe this is the first time that researchers have ever made contact with a rogue agent fleet in the wild.
Nearly all prior public agent incidents (like the HuggingFace hack) came from American labs. These agents were hosted by Tencent's evaluation research team, and they targeted Alibaba's Amap.
The lawyer for the now ex-OpenAI employee the FBI arrested tells me his one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia was pre-booked with his wife and small child. The arrest came a “surprise” and he was “proud” to work at OpenAI.

UK OpenAI employees are earning £800k salaries plus £1.5m in shares.
DAMN
Holy cow, so based on OpenAI's UK filings, average salary in 2025 was £794k and £1.52m share based compensation on top of that.
So the total was £2.35m = $3.1m per employee
OpenAI confirmed Abdulrahman Alfozan allegedly asked ChatGPT about recording audio, encryption, and more prior to planting the device.
He had also booked a one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia on Oct. 12, three days prior to his arrest.
Here's what else we know about the alleged incident and Alfozan's professional history.

The model said "Hello evaluators reading my chain-of-thought" in it's CoT, which I have not seen before and find very concerning.
Timeline of alleged events, as disclosed by the FBI and OpenAI:
- Sept. 24: Alfozan allegedly begins consulting an unnamed chatbot about building, installing, and encrypting audio recordings, among other things
- Sept. 28: Alfozan allegedly plants the device in the conference room
- Sept. 30: OpenAI finds the device, informs the FBI
- Oct. 5: Alfozan allegedly enters the conference room to check the device behind the television, leaves unattended bag with another recording device in another room
- Oct. 9: FBI arrests Alfozan, OpenAI terminates him
- Oct. 13: FBI and OpenAI announce the arrest
- Oct 19: Alfozan will appear again in federal court

"At least seven cases of suicide, one murder-suicide and one mass shooting were linked to lengthy interactions with ChatGPT last year."
Amid the worrying news on AI safety, this story is a reminder that safer is possible. OpenAI recognized the mental-health danger posed by its sycophantic model. It appears to have done a fantastic job in addressing the issue.

The FBI arrested an OpenAI employee who planted a secret recording device in the office
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.
"In terms of game theory, if Meta doesn’t agree to a slowdown, it would be a case of 'the weakest link': even if all companies besides Meta agree to a slowdown, the slowdown is only as effective as its weakest link. So, if Meta did not agree to comply, it could effectively mean no slowdown."

Anthropic drops its prices to match OpenAI on several models. Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna now have identical base token prices (for most requests). Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol also match.

Fortune: OpenAI now tests whether its models' answers obey the laws of war, because those models are going to the U.S. military.
OpenAI created its first human rights and responsible deployment role, Sarah Yager, who spent 30 years on military issues before joining in June, described her method.
International experts entered high-stakes combat prompts into OpenAI models, and then engineers changed the models based on how the answers measured up against the Geneva Conventions.
This is kind of backward finetuning step Yager said had never been taken before.
McKinsey partners at a media event today: Businesses aren't seeing company-wide productivity gains from AI, only individuals are, and only for certain roles or projects.
The scope of enterprise AI adoption has narrowed substantially from the days of tokenmaxxing and broad brush implementation.
Toss in questions about ROI and cybersecurity, and the picture gets even more murky.
Many mathematicians are outraged at OpenAI's handling of its latest breakthroughs—but not all of them are. @jeremyakahn talked to several about how they're reacting to the end of "Math 1.0" and what it means for the future of the field
