Prediction: DC Council will enact a BAT tax because it's the fairest way of capturing revenue from businesses not paying their share of biz taxes but availing themselves of services DC provides. @EricaWilli @DCFPI & Nick Johnson @iteptweets made a very convincing case today.

It's not lost on me that she's decrying Council for approving changes that she too approved: like use of reserves in THIS budget & another round of tax changes to preserve precious revenue. Recall her May letter (next tweet) negotiating w/Council on where the 1-time $ should go!

This morning, I attended a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee meeting, where members advanced a deeply anti-DC bill that could devastate our economy and undermine our ability to govern our own city.
I was stunned to learn that DoorDash, a company that employs tens of thousands of Dashers in DC and partners with thousands of DC merchants, sent a letter supporting one of the biggest assaults on DC in decades.
It is absolutely outrageous that a company profiting from our city would support legislation that could do such serious harm to it.
I have contacted DoorDash and demanded an explanation. Washingtonians deserve answers, and I will report back when I receive them.

Corporate influence on politics erodes democracy and makes life less affordable.
From pharmaceutical companies fighting universal healthcare, to oil & gas corps fueling the climate crisis, to DoorDash now trying to end DC autonomy.
It's working people vs the oligarchy.
Interesting: @DoorDash is supporting the GOP bill in Congress to limit D.C.'s ability to increase or decrease taxes and fees, largely in response to the D.C. Council's recent vote in impose a new 20-cent delivery fee to help fund food-access programs. notus.org/metro/ubereats-doo…

A new report from DC Auditor Kathy Patterson shows public safety agencies spent ~$220 million(!) on overtime last year.
But she also found leave, not staffing, accounted for a lot of that. And she said agencies are paying "exorbitant amounts" of OT to a small # of employees.

H.R. 9720 isn't just about taxes. The bill would hand Congress veto power over huge swaths of D.C. law and block the District from cutting taxes as easily as it blocks D.C. from raising them. This is about power and the right to self-governance.

Today, the US House Oversight Committee is poised to mark up a bill that continues a series of attacks on DC’s ability to self-govern and make decisions about its own resources.
“We cannot keep asking the people who need the most to give the most, while asking those who have the most to give nothing more,” @BrianneKNadeau said.

The American tax code has spent its history widening the racial wealth gap, not closing it.
It's time to confront how tax policy has shaped inequality and build a fairer future.

“...it’s just a one-time fix. By failing to take up the wealth proceeds tax, which would advance racial and tax justice, it means lawmakers are kicking the can down the road,” @TazraMitchell said.

Thank you @CoryBooker for speaking up for #DCstatehood! DC residents have the right to elect our government representatives without threats of a federal takeover.

DC Council is creating new tax breaks for developers to build housing & commercial space—in return, they must build some affordable housing, prioritize hiring DC residents & contract w/ DC businesses BUT the tax breaks lack clawbacks to ensure that happens bit.ly/441vTyI

Excellent letter from @ChmnMendelson to the CFO on Council using a small amount of our hefty reserves. He is correct to push back on the CFO's overreach on policy decisions and wrong definition of "balanced budget" under the Home Rule Act. Read it here: chairmanmendelson.com/2026/0…

Threatening to take away our rights because you don’t like who we vote for is authoritarian and anti-American. The right to vote for representation is fundamental to democracy.
President Trump said he might “take back” D.C. depending on who wins the mayoral race in the city, stating he would be opposed to Janeese Lewis George winning next week’s Democratic primary. notus.org/metro/trump-dc-tak…
Last night, President Trump threatened to revert DC to governance on a “federal basis.” The statement is the latest in this administration's pattern of interference in DC's autonomy & a direct threat to the democratic rights of DC residents.

Another solid thread from national tax experts on what a Wealth Proceeds Tax would do and who would be affected---details that WaPo got wrong.

DC City Council is considering a version of our Wealth Proceeds Tax — a tax on passive investment income, such as capital gains, from wealthy households.
The Washington Post editorial page on Monday mischaracterized this proposal and its implications, so let’s clear things up.
CLASP denounces the passage of a budget reconciliation bill and the immeasurable harm it will cause to families across the country. Congress giving an additional $70B to ICE and CBP on top of the billions already received last summer flies in the face of the policies people need.
