I'm hunting through my hyena photos for something and thought I'd share a few gems again. Every time I do this I find myself completely boggled that people think these animals are ugly and uncharismatic
Something about water makes hyenas immediately revert into enormous children. Equally true for wild hyenas where I've seen distinguished 15+ year old females romp around like cubs in a puddle

After many hours of sitting in a field staring at squirrels, the fruit of that labor is published! Part of my dissertation work with @JennSmithSocBeh exploring the intersection of space use and social behavior is out now in Animal Behaviour, open to all!

Amazing opportunity available with the Mara Hyena Project! My year in Kenya was one of the best experiences I've ever had - check it out if living in a tent and chasing hyenas sounds like a dream to you!
The law of the universe states that the second you click "record" on a virtual talk, your neighbors will start trimming their hedges and your cat will begin clattering around the house and screaming.
If you missed my talk at #ABS2024, you can check it out online starting July 8!

Excited to finally post about this paper in Paleobiology Iβve been working on with Isaac Krone and @the_rock_hobbit
Itβs our first order approximation of what could end up in the fossil record of the future π¦΄β°πΈ

New #squirrel update! California ground squirrels show an amazing variety of behaviors, from social interactions to anti-predator responses. Here some of my favorites:
1) Adorable every time - the biiig stretchy yawns! (1/6)
Hey #IMC13! Interested in squirrels, social behavior, space use, or all of the above? Kick back and relax at my talk in the Behavior session tonight at 5pm!

Time for a field season update! Since 2013, @JennSmithSocBeh & Team Squirrel have studied the California Ground Squirrels at Briones Regional Park. This long-term study has taught us so much about the species life history, social behavior, physiology and much more. (1/5)

π¨#Team #Squirrel has officially trapped, marked, and released 1,234 unique California ground squirrels! Thanks to @wild_sonja @ErinPerson2 @mmuellermaddie @binnett_a @ChelseaOrtizJi1 & many more for helping to track them! So many different #personalities! Easy, as 1, 2, 3 (4)?π₯³

My friend Gabe passed away suddenly and tragically while doing research in Sonora, Mexico. If you have anything to spare, please help his family and loved ones give him a proper homegoing gofund.me/585b2768

Congratulations to @ErinPerson2 + undergrads Kianna & Jada + Eileen Lacey @UCBerkeley #mammalogists for validating the collection of fecal samples in field conditions and getting us ready to link #squirrels social networks to microbiota π§¬π©πΏοΈ
Delighted to share the first publication from my dissertation research with @JennSmithSocBeh! We tested field collection methods for fecal microbiome samples to see if microbial communities were affected (spoilers: not as much as you might think!)

This is so great: "We named this species in honor of Eileen Lacey, a North American biologist devoted to studying the evolution of behavioral diversity of mammals." Congrats Eileen!! β₯οΈ

For every 15 minutes spent feeling very smart because you solved a tricky code problem, you have to spend 30 minutes tearing your hair out because you can't get two tables to merge, only to realize some spaces snuck into one of your columns
It's #HyenaDay which means I have to share cute hyena media! Throwback to 2016 Happy Zebra clan with O'Malley and Mandrake (tiny cubs) getting up to some shenanigans before Toothless (big orange cub) joins the fray. All carnivores love a good game of "bite your face"
