I kinda wanted to move on from all this but I just couldn’t get this out of my head lolol. I think u can’t really overlook racism in fandom “because it’s escapism” because my ways of escapism ARE built around racism. U may be able to escape all that discourse, but BIPOC can’t.🧵
ive never really understood the appeal of relying on racist / orientalist troupes because (aside from being incredibly harmful) its just so Boring and Uncreative. do people just not care about exploring nuance in the work anymore
when we draw inspiration from something as artists, we hold a moral obligation to respect the source material. choosing to portray real cultures and people, who are complex and thoughtful, as one dimensional stereotypes / troupes is pathetic
