Trump: We were in the midst of negotiating and a lot of stupid people said why aren’t you putting Russian sanctions—
Collins: But you said you didn’t give anything for his release
Trump: If I didn’t do that, you wouldn’t have him coming back.
Collins: So you did give something.
Trump: You don’t know anything. You’re fake news CNN.
Collins: You’re saying you lifted the sanctions in exchange for his release?
Trump: You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re a low IQ person. You’re a dummy.

The French Embassy in Monaco holds the world record as the closest embassy to the border of the territory it represents. The building the embassy occupies is just 50 metres from the French border.
Oct 20, 1803: The Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase. The president who made the deal wasn't sure it was constitutional.
Napoleon had offered to sell all of Louisiana, about 828,000 square miles, for $15 million. It doubled the size of the United States overnight. Thomas Jefferson was thrilled, and also uneasy. He had always argued the federal government could only do what the Constitution specifically allowed, and it said nothing about buying land from foreign countries.
He drafted a constitutional amendment to make the purchase legal. Then his diplomats warned him that Napoleon was unpredictable and might change his mind if the US took too long. Jefferson dropped the amendment and sent the treaty to the Senate.
Federalists in New England hated the deal. They feared new western states would shrink their power, and a few even talked about breaking away from the Union. It didn't matter. The Senate approved it 24 to 7.
The US didn't have $15 million on hand. It paid largely with bonds sold through British and Dutch banks. That meant British bankers were helping finance a deal that put money in the pocket of Napoleon, Britain's worst enemy.
Two months later the American flag went up in New Orleans. The next spring, Lewis and Clark set out to see what the country had bought.

In 1967, Florian Albert received the Ballon d'Or trophy in the kitchen of his home in Budapest.
In 2001, Michael Owen "didn't have to attend the ceremony" because the organisers from France Football magazine brought the trophy to him in Liverpool.
Now in its 70th year, the Ballon d’Or has taken on a life of its own. Not only is the trophy now significantly bigger — an orb modelled on a full-size football, dipped in gold, resting on a base made of pyrite — but so is everything around it.
In the words of Pascal Ferre, who oversaw the award as France Football’s editor between 2016 and 2023, “it makes people crazy.”

Harry Kane is favourite for the Ballon d’Or and would deserve to win it after the season he’s had.
But in Munich there’s little affection for the award, which clashes with German football culture.
