Wouldn’t it be great if a person who wanted to build 22 market-rate housing units + four subsidized units could just go do that rather than begging and pleading for permission from the Zoning Commission?
Are jobs + tax revenue too plentiful?

Important reminder from Trump that if he wins again we won’t have John McCain around to stop him from enacting steep cuts in Medicaid, eliminating consumer protection regulations on private insurance plans, etc

"Does density lead to affordability?" Total midwit framing. (Not the author's, but his subject's.) There is no static affordable or unaffordable level of density. There is supply relative to demand, as revealed by vacancy rates, units per capita, etc. cp-dr.com/articles/does-dens…

Paris will be holding a referendum on *dramatically* raising parking fees for SUVs and other large vehicles with the goal of discouraging them from coming into the city at all

Another another way to look at this — regulatory constraints to building homes in most major US cities are so severe, only the most well-capitalized, high-end developers can afford to make it through process.
Many cities respond to this by making it even more expensive to build.

It's our favourite time of year - tree planting season! 🌳
Winter is the best time to plant trees as the soil is wet, with plenty of rain to water young trees 🌧️
This gives them a chance to establish before the warmer months ☀️

People are requesting universal daylighting at intersections or curb extensions. SEE this segment from a @Streetfilms of a tour where we see ample daylighting in Hoboken where it's standard practice.

The boundary of Paris (minus its large peripheral parks) superimposed on San Francisco and rotated for fit. The two cities are similar in size, but Paris has 2.5 times as many people.
It's completely absurd that San Francisco's population is under one million.

If you're on a City Planning Commission, this is what leadership looks like. Ask your planning department: why are we upholding zoning rules and norms that reinforce housing scarcity and segregation?

As @KickMap Eddie reminded me, this series of in-situ Vignelli car maps would be ncomplete without screenshots from 'The Warriors' (dir. Walter Hill, 1979). Strictly speaking, the map is not incidental, as it's featured in the scene where the Warrior gang ges lost on the subway.

REMINDER: Those choosing to live in the subsidized suburbs for a bigger house and yard are NOT also entitled to free-flow car traffic capacity (aka “easy car commute”) into the city at the expense of the taxes, health, safety & quality of life of city-dwellers.

Interesting that London Transport was already producing graphics illustrating the spatial efficiency of buses in 1965, very much like the ones that circulate on social media today - they understood the urban congestion problem, but lacked the policy instruments to reverse it.

Me: We need fewer cars, less driving & better cities.
Strawman: We could never completely ban cars.
Anecdoter: How will I get my kid to hockey or get to work from my car-dependent suburb?
Tech booster: cars will be electric in blank years anyway…
Me again: Listen carefully…

It feels like today’s great jobs report received more negative news coverage than Trump telling a foreign national our nuclear secrets. Absolutely insane.

One of the craziest findings in urban planning is that you can reach more jobs faster by car in Dutch cities than American cities — *and* walking, cycling, and transit are faster in Dutch cities.
Building cities for cars fails even cars. @BrentToderian
