With school starting back here are some safety tips for driving in and near school zones:
#1 - When school zone flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians using the crosswalk or intersection.
#2 - Don't load or unload children across the street from the school. Instead, load or unload adjacent to the school or in the designated parking area.
#3 - Don't “double park,” or park your vehicle on the roadway side of a vehicle already parked at the curb. This blocks visibility for children and drivers.
#4 - If the yellow or red lights are flashing, and the stop arm is extended on a school bus, traffic must stop.
We wish everyone a successful school year!

Scenic U.S. 90 between Tallahassee and Monticello in @MyFDOT_NWFL is also known as Mahan Drive, named after Monticello resident Fred A. Mahan, who owned the Monticello Nursery Company in the late 1920s. Mr. Mahan was dedicated to the beautification of highways and donated over 35,000 plants that were planted by local residents along the road that would later bear his name.

Whenever you operate a vehicle, safety is ALWAYS the number one priority.
Drivers, bikers, and pedestrians all deserve to make it home at the end of the day. That’s why during #StopOnRedWeek, we are reminded that we have the power to prevent traffic incidents when we exercise caution at intersections and stop on red.

🚨 Milestone Alert! 🚨
ICYMI: The final concrete bridge girder over water was installed for the new North Causeway Bridge in the City of Fort Pierce in @MyFDOT_SEFL! 🏗️🌉
The new bridge will have a total of 164 concrete bridge girders. 117 have been installed from the east end of the bridge to the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway. 47 girders remain to be installed on the west end.
This is a major step forward in the structure’s progress and brings us closer to a safer, stronger, and more reliable crossing for the community.

Severe weather can bring the unexpected, making preparation the key to success. To prepare for any power outages that may occur, FDOT stages fully fueled generators that can be deployed after a storm to help keep traffic signals operational under temporary power. While these generators are in use, crews work nonstop to keep them fueled as they work towards getting permanent power restored.

Florida = #1 🏆 in oversized/overweight truck parking! Big rigs? No problem. We’ve got space. 🚚🅿️
Moving large cargo is easy in Florida. FDOT offers a flexible and simple permitting process, including a self-issue permit option. We’ve got safety covered too by requiring escorts for oversized/overweight cargo. With our Truck Parking Availability System, we are helping truckers locate safe parking options across the state in real time.

Storms can be unpredictable, which is why FDOT stays ready with an in-house storm team, including our own meteorologist!
Using tools like radar and satellite data, our meteorologist provides expertise that helps guide decisions during rapidly-evolving weather events. This is one of the reasons that FDOT can respond so quickly before, during, and after a storm.

Are Shared-Use Paths and sidewalks the same thing? Not quite.
Shared-use paths and sidewalks may appear similar at first glance, but they serve different purposes and are designed with different users in mind. Shared-use paths are paved facilities that are physically separated from motorized vehicular traffic by an open space or barrier and provide a more comfortable and scenic route for mixed-use traffic. They are typically wider than sidewalks to safely accommodate a wide variety of non-motorized users.
Sidewalks, on the other hand, are primarily intended for pedestrian use, are generally narrower, and are often located directly adjacent to the roadway. While there is some overlap in how these facilities are used, both play a unique and important role in keeping our communities connected and enhancing the safety and accessibility of our transportation network across the state.
