#DiasporaInvestment can be a powerful driver of rural transformation. In Mali, Ciwara Capital shows how diaspora investment can strengthen local businesses, support farmers and create jobs, helping to build more resilient rural economies.
With support from the European Union and partners, IFAD backed the establishment of Ciwara Capital, an investment fund entirely owned by the Malian diaspora. Beyond the US$55 billion sent home each year in remittances, diaspora capital can play a growing role in addressing Africa’s financing gaps, combining financial returns with economic, social and environmental impact. Through its investment in SOPROTRILAD, a rice company in Mopti, Ciwara Capital is helping strengthen market opportunities for more than 3,000 small-scale producers across over 160 agricultural cooperatives, while supporting a new rice factory that will create jobs and strengthen rural resilience. Ciwara Capital demonstrates how African diaspora investment can help connect finance with rural transformation, strengthening businesses, supporting farmers and creating opportunities for communities to build more resilient rural economies. Remittances are one of the world’s most resilient sources of household finance, supporting more than 1.1 billion people. The 2026 #SendingMoneyHome report, recently released by the IFAD-administered @FFRemittances, examined how these flows changed over the past decade and provides a practical basis for action by both the public and private sectors. This is the story of 1/6 of the global population 🌍 @DevasconcelosP, Financing Facility for Remittances Manager, explains the key findings from the latest edition of #SendingMoneyHome report. #Remittances #Diaspora
Remittances are one of the world’s most resilient sources of household finance, supporting more than 1.1 billion people. The 2026 #SendingMoneyHome report, released today by the IFAD-administered Financing Facility for Remittances (FFR), examines how these flows changed over the past decade and explores the impact of migrant workers’ remittances on families, communities and development in low- and middle-income countries. Key findings show that: 🔹Remittance flows nearly doubled: Asia still receives half, Latin America grew fastest and flows to Africa nearly doubled. 🔹Around 220 million migrant workers send money home worldwide and by 2030, migrants and diaspora are expected to send more than US$3.6 trillion cumulatively to their home countries. 🔹About 1/3 of these remittances go to rural areas, where they can also open pathways to savings, insurance and investment in enterprises and other livelihood opportunities. The report’s findings and recommendations provide a practical basis for action by both the public and private sectors. Behind every #remittance is a story of commitment, sacrifice and support. The latest #SendingMoneyHome report shows how remittances help families meet daily needs while creating opportunities for the future.
Remittance inflows to low- and middle-income countries reached US$728.6 billion in 2025 – more than four times global official development assistance that year and greater than foreign direct investment to those countries, according to the 2026 Sending Money Home report launched today by IFAD. According to the report, remittances have remained one of the world's largest and most consistent sources of household finance over the past decade, helping families meet basic needs, build resilience and invest in their futures, even in times of crisis. “As remittances help families meet their basic needs, they are also building financial growth and resilience to shocks,” said @IFADPresident Alvaro Lario. “Their potential benefits are greatest when families have access to affordable and trusted financial services, together with the knowledge, freedom and appropriate options to use their resources according to their own needs and aspirations,” added Lario. The findings highlight opportunities for policymakers to strengthen the impact of remittances on resilience, financial inclusion and economic opportunity while recognizing that these private flows cannot replace public investment, social protection or climate finance.
