After a long stretch focused on writing, I’m sharing a new video 🎥 How to Write Historical Context Into Family Histories (Without Making Things Up) It began as a coaching call idea about common struggles. Turns out, it needed to be said. ▶️ youtu.be/JnkuaRZYzjs

Some DNA platforms quietly do part of the work for you. Others… don’t. Same data. Different experience. And if you don’t notice the difference, it can shape how you interpret your matches. youtube.com/shorts/svWdkGvfH… #genealogy #dnatesting

The most spiritually defining points of my mission were also the most emotionally devastating. When the world breaks us it is just an opportunity for The Lord to forge us into something stronger.

Seeing a lot of claims today that being White British means you can trace your family back 1,000 years. No. That is not how genealogy works. Parish registers in England and Wales were ordered by Thomas Cromwell in 1538, but many only become consistently useful from the 1600s, sometimes later. Before that, you need wills, land records, manorial records, court records, tax records etc. Most online trees are not done to Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) and are often full of copied errors. I’ve been commissioned to research numerous family trees to GPS, and only on a handful of occasions have I been able to prove a line back to nobility. Some people can prove a line back 1,000 years, but usually through a documented gateway into gentry or nobility. Plenty of ordinary British families trace back several centuries and remain exactly that … ordinary British families. Ancestry hints are not a medieval blood oath… #pet hate

Thanks for sharing this. We teach genealogy so this can happen
Leftists want to erase the past, not because of injustice, but because of piety. When you know your patrimony you naturally resist radical politics. The Left wants to start at zero and call a new order into existence from nothing. A neglected tactic for resisting this is recovering your family history. When the history of your nation is family history, it is no longer an abstraction that you can dismiss thoughtless. It’s too personal for that. You grow pious in the old fashioned sense of the word. I’ve been posting about my discoveries as I’ve climbed my family tree. I’ve learned remarkable things about my ancestors. You can do the same thing. We live in a golden age when it comes to genealogy. Go ahead and start climbing if you can. I think you will learn remarkable things about your ancestors, too.

My dumb idea of the day: We should establish something like birthstones, but for men. Instead of each month getting a gemstone, each month gets assigned a cut of meat. January: New York Strip February: Filet Mignon March: Porterhouse And so on. You’d ask a guy his birthday and instead of saying, “Oh, you’re an amethyst,” you’d say, “Ah, February. Filet Mignon. Sensitive, expensive, and a little smaller than expected.” I can hear the commercials already “Celebrate his birth month with the timeless elegance of brisket.”

If two men are possible fathers… can DNA tell you which one? Autosomal DNA gets you close. X-DNA changes the picture. But only if you understand what each one is actually showing. youtu.be/sR-wz7U_U9E #genealogy #dnatesting

I tested the AI Prompt Builder in RootsMagic to see how it actually works in a real research workflow. What @RootsMagic does well surprised me, but there's a trick to get it to do more. 🔗 youtu.be/S5vdX9rsRUI #Genealogy #RootsMagic

In family history, people toss around the standard of 'doing no harm.' But this experience had me rethinking the meaning of my hard and my role as a genealogist. youtu.be/JrL3IF3sslo #genealogy #familyhistory

Accuracy answers one family history question. Do genealogical ethics answers another. What happens when they reality and the ethical standards are at odds?
48
If a detail doesn’t make it into the genealogy research prompt… it doesn’t make it into the analysis. That’s not an AI problem. That’s a family history workflow problem.

I tested the AI tools in RootsMagic this week. They worked fast. But something important wasn’t making it into the results.

Blood traits can sound… more flexible than they really are. “If this changes… could my Rh factor change too?” It’s a reasonable question. But the answer says more about how traits are inherited than it does about change. youtube.com/shorts/Hn2Ji991-… #genealogy #dnatesting

When a family story involves trauma, the question shifts. Not just “What happened?” But “How should this be told… and for whom?” Discover the family history lessons from the @latterdailyst personal experience with tragedy. youtu.be/HBH6fTfey0g #genealogy #writingtips

Not every true and difficult family history needs to be told the same way.

When will people stop starting Sacrament talks with "the church leader asked me to give a talk and i didn't want to" or "if you know me, I'd rather not be giving this talk"? Just give the Sacrament talk. #ldsx

Some stories aren’t hard because of genealogical details. They’re hard because of what our ancestors experienced. Trauma Conflict Loss Writing these family histories isn’t just about accuracy. It’s about how you choose to tell it.
