SAFTU CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT LULA ON HIS VICTORY: A PEOPLE DEFEND GAINS THEY CAN SEE – 26 October 2026 The South African Federation of Trade Unions congratulates President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election and salutes the Brazilian workers, poor people, Indigenous communities and all those who mobilised to defend their democratic and social gains. Lula won 51.8% of the vote, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro by nearly 4.4 million votes. His victory is a setback for the right-wing forces seeking to consolidate power across Latin America and bring the region closer to the agenda of US President Donald Trump. It gives Brazil the opportunity to continue advancing an independent voice for the Global South.  This election was not simply a vote for a political personality. It was a struggle over land, livelihood, dignity and the direction of development. Brazil’s Indigenous communities had particular reason to fear a Bolsonaro victory. Lula’s government restored the process of recognising Indigenous territories, established a Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and appointed Indigenous leaders to senior positions. By November 2025, his administration had approved 20 territories covering about 2.5 million hectares. These advances are incomplete, and Indigenous organisations continue to demand faster demarcation and stronger protection. But the return of territorial recognition gave communities something concrete to defend.  Land reform also matters to Brazil’s landless rural workers and small farmers. Lula’s government says 266,000 families have been included in its agrarian reform programme during this term through new settlements, recognition of land claims and regularisation. The Landless Workers’ Movement continues to criticise the pace of reform, while insisting that access to land is essential to democracy and food sovereignty.  Workers and poor families also had material gains to defend. Between 2022 and 2024, about 17.3 million people moved out of poverty. In 2024 alone, 1.9 million people moved out of extreme poverty, while 24.4 million left severe food insecurity. Brazil’s employed population reached a record 103.3 million in 2024, and the number of unemployed people fell by 1.1 million from the previous year. Lula’s government raised the minimum wage in real terms and introduced income-tax relief for people earning up to R$5,000 a month. These gains did not end inequality or insecurity, but they were tangible improvements that ordinary people could see in their lives.  The contrast with South Africa is stark: Brazil: gains people mobilised to defend South Africa: setbacks and growing demoralisation Indigenous territorial recognition resumed, with new areas approved and Indigenous people given a place in government. Agrarian reform included hundreds of thousands of families, though movements continue to demand more. Land restitution and redistribution remain painfully slow. The promise of land reform has not transformed ownership or rural livelihoods at the scale required. About 17.3 million people moved out of poverty between 2022 and 2024; 24.4 million left severe food insecurity. Poverty and hunger remain widespread. SAFTU has cited estimates that 17 to 20 million people skip meals daily, while unemployment and inequality remain entrenched. Employment reached a record 103.3 million in 2024; unemployment fell by 1.1 million that year. Mass unemployment, deindustrialisation and retrenchments continue, while many people rely on insecure and precarious work. Real minimum-wage increases and tax relief for lower earners put more income into workers’ hands. Austerity and rising living costs erode working-class incomes and constrain the public services people depend on. People could point to gains in land, food security, income and employment while demanding that Lula do more. The ANC’s support fell from 69.7% in 2004 to 40.18% in 2024. In 2024, only 16.29 million people voted out of a voting-age population of roughly 40 million.

Yes. Yes. Yes.
With great joy, I congratulate my dear brother President Lula @LulaOficial on his historic fourth presidential election victory and the renewed trust of the Brazilian people. We share a simple but profound conviction. Politics must improve people’s lives, uphold their dignity and bring hope to those too often left behind. That commitment to social justice remains at the heart of our work. I look forward to strengthening the friendship between Barbados and Brazil as we continue building a fairer, more inclusive and peaceful world. May God continue to guide and strengthen you, dear brother. There is much work ahead, and much good still to be done!

Our passion and our drive is not matched by processes and resources and infrastructure that works. The EFF’s commitments to insourcing municipal services and expanding access to basic infrastructure with a greater emphasis on how residents participate in decisions affecting their communities; ward-based people’s assemblies, technical oversight teams to scrutinise infrastructure spending and a one-stop municipal service centre where entrepreneurs and informal traders can get help with permits, registration and compliance. We work hard in Johannesburg, but we also come here to play and to dream, and to be creative. And I think it’s very important to not neglect that. #VoteEFF dailymaverick.co.za/article/…

Isn't it interesting, all these videos of people we've never heard of, whose work is unknown, with no public archive or commentary on any issue, SUDDENLY appearing at the same time to bitch about Islam and halal food. In South Africa? In 2026? In the year of a local government election, suddenly mainly Black influencers and bots with black faces are recording Islamophobic commentary. For a fee no doubt. Who benefits from this? I hope @GovernmentZA is REALLY sharpening its lens on disinformation and paid campaigns. Deliberate manufacturing of religious and tribal hostility is a matter of national importance.

1. There is no “halal replacement of food.” Halal certification of packaged food has been practised in South Africa for decades & is voluntary. All the “halal-certified” label means is that the food products meet Islamic dietary requirements. Nothing is added to the food.

I grew up watching Mr. Bean. ❤️ Before the war, whenever my family wanted a happy evening, my mother would make popcorn, and we would all gather around the TV to watch his funny shows. I was just a child, with no worries, enjoying those beautiful family moments. I never knew his real voice. I had only ever seen him make us laugh. Today, for the first time, I hear him speak about us. And for the first time, the man who brought so much laughter into my childhood makes me cry instead. 💔 Please listen to him carefully. The face I once associated with laughter is now speaking about our pain. I never imagined I would live to see the day when Mr. Bean would remind me not of the happiness of my childhood, but of the heartbreaking reality of what we have endured.

Fellow South Africans, let's remember as Nelson Mandela said: "Our Freedom is incomplete until Palestine is free" Why is that so? Simply put: "All Struggles for Justice intersect, because systems of Oppression intersect." Relevant today as “Potholes and Palestine”. We see evidence of that in the increased price of petrol as a result of the zionist war and Genocide. Remember that the Genocide is a human rights issue. Churches and Mosques have been bombed. Children, babies, mothers, women, men, elders all indiscriminately killed. Today I bear witness that the Genocide by zionist Israel has lasted for exactly 3 years, spanning 1096 days from October 7 2023 to October 2026. We have to break the cycle of impunity. We demand justice against the wretched Genocide. I continue to speak out against the unconscionable Genocide.

@USAmbRSA @BrentBozell You recently threw a fit because South Africa's Deputy President went on a working visit to China. Yesterday Trump welcomed Xi Jinping on the tarmac and the White House put on an unusually large military display. It is a state visit nogal! Your president went personally, with all honors to receive Xi Jinping. Something that Xi Jinping didn't do for him when he was visiting! In addition; Trump has invited Putin to the G20, much to the consternation of US allies. Do you have anything to say. I guess not. You are a bully and a hypocrite. The Unipolar moment is over. Your own country has been instrumental in undoing it. There is no turning back. Nobody is prepared to listen to bullies on the global stage.
