How many Americans know that after the 1991 Gulf War, five hundred and eleven Japanese sailors sailed wooden ships straight into the deadliest minefields in the Persian Gulf for the United States Navy?
At the time, television commentators around the world mocked Japan for only sending money during the war. Those critics never bothered to look out at the burning waters off Kuwait.
In April 1991, Captain Taosa Ochiai led six Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels eight thousand miles across the ocean for Operation Gulf Dawn. Four of his ships were tiny coastal minesweepers built out of wood.
They had to be made of wood. A steel hull triggers the magnetic sensors inside underwater bottom mines and blows the crew to pieces.
Working in one-hundred-and-twenty-degree heat beneath black oil smoke and waters swarming with venomous sea snakes, the Japanese sailors volunteered for the shallow, high-risk sectors alongside U.S. Navy minesweepers.
Because their wooden hulls had no air conditioning powerful enough for the Arabian summer, Japanese sailors slept on the scorching decks at night and hunted live acoustic and magnetic mines every morning.
Over ninety-nine brutal days, those Japanese crews found and detonated thirty-four live Iraqi naval mines without losing a single man.
Politicians talk about alliances on television. Real allies sail wooden boats into a minefield so American ships can come home safe.

🇵🇭🙄 Why can't these students from UP-Diliman also protest against Chinese disrespect of Philippine territory coupled with Chinese bullying and harassment towards Filipinos?
Double standards again.
LOOK: Students from the University of the Philippines Diliman hold a banner calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Philippines following the arrival of U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for the 20th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
The protesters denounce Hegseth as a key enforcer of the Trump administration’s militarist agenda, accusing the U.S. government of expanding its military presence and preparing for heightened confrontation with China in the Asia-Pacific region. They also oppose the proposed development of PAX Silica, an advanced manufacturing park intended to support artificial intelligence (AI) supply chains, citing concerns over its potential impact on Filipino farmers, Indigenous communities, and the environment.

In almost any large city on Earth, if the entire power grid collapses at three in the morning and every streetlamp and alarm goes dead, store owners board up their windows to stop looting.
At 3:08 a.m. on September 6, 2018, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Hokkaido, Japan, knocking out one hundred percent of the electricity for all 5.3 million residents.
Every traffic light, ATM, and refrigerator across the island went dark at once.
Instead of locking their doors or raising prices, clerks at Hokkaido's local convenience store chain, Seicomart, opened their emergency kits before dawn.
Years earlier, the company had equipped every store with power inverters designed to plug directly into the twelve-volt car batteries of employees' vehicles parked outside the front doors, alongside propane gas rice cookers that do not rely on electric lines.
By sunrise, over ninety-five percent of their one thousand one hundred stores were open.
With cables running from idling cars into the registers, clerks cooked fresh, steaming hot salted rice balls over propane flames by lantern light and sold them for the exact same one-dollar price as the day before.
Outside in the dark, thousands of hungry neighbors stood quietly in single-file lines, counting out exact coins and bowing to the exhausted staff.
Civilization is revealed when the lights go out.
Sad to say Philippines is the laughing stock of the world 🤦♂️

I won't be surprised if tomorrow's deadline for Bato's surrender is extended for "humanitarian reasons".
Pwede rin sabihin wait muna ang decision on the MR out of respect to the SC.
Jonvic will never run out of alibis and excuses to defend his incompetence.

When a fighter jet loses its fuel system over the freezing North Atlantic Ocean, standard military procedure says the pilots must eject and let the aircraft sink.
On September 5, 1983, United States Air Force Captain Jon "Ghost" Alexander and First Lieutenant Karol Wojcikowski were 520 miles from land when their F-4E Phantom II suffered a catastrophic fuel valve failure.
In the icy Atlantic waves below, an ejected pilot had just ninety seconds of consciousness before freezing to death.
One hundred miles away, a four-engine KC-135A Stratotanker named North Star heard their mayday. Captain Robert Goodman, Captain Michael Clover, and boom operator Technical Sergeant Ron Craft turned their 100-ton tanker around immediately.
Even after they hooked up, the Phantom's broken valves could not take enough fuel, one engine flamed out, and the crippled fighter began dropping too slow for a jet tanker to stay connected.
So the crew of North Star broke every rule in the flight manual.
At just 1,400 feet above the waves, Captain Goodman lowered the massive tanker's landing gear in mid-air to create drag, pulled his four engines to idle, and slowed to 190 knots.
For the final 160 miles to Gander, Newfoundland, Sergeant Craft kept that rigid metal refueling boom locked tight inside the Phantom's spine, literally towing the crippled fighter through the sky until both men landed safely.
A refueling boom is built to pump gas. In American hands, it became a tow rope strong enough to drag two brothers home.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has proposed a new defense framework with ASEAN member states to strengthen regional cooperation and deter coercion and aggression.
Speaking at the US-ASEAN Defense Ministers Informal Meeting in Cebu, Hegseth said the framework would provide a practical guide for defense cooperation over the coming years.
Hegseth also highlighted the 50th anniversary of US-Southeast Asia relations in 2027, saying Washington remains committed to a stable, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific grounded in mutual respect, sovereignty, and stronger national defense capabilities.

Hegseth’s warning about Chinese influence networks in American universities carries a lesson for the Philippines, and his announcement offers a useful point of comparison.
In 2025, the NBI arrested Chinese nationals suspected of espionage in Palawan, including individuals it identified as members of Chinese-linked civic organisations. The investigation raised serious questions about the intersection of institutional relationships, surveillance and national security.
Recently, a group of 150 supposed Chinese volunteer instructors from mainland China organised by Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc., the Philippine Chinese Education Research Center, and the Chinese Embassy were withdrawn and sent home.
The danger is not Chinese culture, Chinese ethnicity or legitimate friendship. It is the possibility that organisations, financial networks and information operations can be used to advance a foreign state’s strategic objectives inside our own republic.
China’s National Intelligence Law, contains provisions requiring organisations and citizens to support, assist and cooperate with national intelligence work in accordance with the law. This creates legitimate questions about the potential obligations of individuals and organisations subject to Chinese jurisdiction.
A January 2026 investigation published by The Diplomat examined United Front-linked activities in the Philippines, including relationships with overseas Chinese associations and engagement with Philippine communities.
The investigation highlighted the potential significance of relationships among associations, Chinese diplomatic representatives and officials involved in United Front activities. It also noted that the extent and effects of these networks remain incompletely understood.
The Philippines must investigate the networks, follow the money, expose covert foreign direction and protect sensitive institutions. We must also confront coordinated disinformation, including the local pro-China propagandists, without criminalising legitimate dissent.
Our sovereignty cannot depend on identifying threats only after the damage is done.

If someone asks you how much a single soldier's life is worth to the United States Air Force, show them a three-hundred-million-dollar C-17 cargo jet flying across continents with only one hospital bed bolted to the floor.
In 2010, a young American soldier wounded in Afghanistan suffered catastrophic lung failure.
Even with a combat ventilator turned to one hundred percent oxygen, his damaged lungs could no longer pass oxygen into his bloodstream, and field doctors knew he had only hours to live.
A standard medical helicopter cannot run an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation machine, which pumps a patient's entire blood supply outside the body through an artificial lung and requires heavy electrical power and pressurized cabin stability at thirty thousand feet.
Refusing to let one soldier die, U.S. Air Force critical care specialists from the 59th Medical Wing and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center flew directly into the war zone with a portable heart-lung bypass system.
They cleared the cavernous cargo bay of a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III built to haul a seventy-ton battle tank and strapped the soldier's bed dead center on the steel deck.
For three thousand miles from Afghanistan to Germany, five military doctors and nurses stood around that single bed in the roaring cargo hold, monitoring every drop of his blood until he survived.
No nation on Earth fights harder for a single human heartbeat than the United States military.

🇺🇸 A young woman from Nashville, Tennessee, survived the attack on Pearl Harbor from the cockpit of a training plane.
She was just 22.
If you’ve seen Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), you may remember the civilian flight instructor suddenly surrounded by Japanese aircraft.
Her name was Cornelia Fort, a strikingly beautiful young woman and a skilled pilot. The woman behind that scene was real.
On December 7, 1941, Cornelia was giving a flying lesson over Oahu when a Japanese Zero came dangerously close. She seized the controls and narrowly avoided a collision.
Then she saw smoke rising over Pearl Harbor.
Cornelia brought her student safely back to the airfield. She had become one of the few American pilots to witness the opening attack from the air.
In September 1942, she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, becoming one of the pioneering women entrusted with flying military aircraft across the United States. They served as civilians, delivering planes needed for the war effort.
On March 21, 1943, another aircraft struck the BT-13 she was ferrying over Texas. Fort’s aircraft crashed, killing her. She became the first American woman pilot to die in the line of duty flying for the U.S. military.
She was 24.
Hollywood preserved a moment of her life. Her name deserves to be remembered, too.
