“If you ask a large language model what two plus two is, it will likely say four — not because it calculated what two plus two equals, but because the model recognizes four as the most commonly found answer to that question. Our goal is to develop a model that can instead apply more meaningful quantitative reasoning to better comprehend numerical data.” Michael Gubanov, an associate professor in @FSUComputerSci, has earned an @NSF CAREER Award! This award will support his work to develop a new type of AI model that better calculates and uses numeric data, including large-scale healthcare data for applications in cancer research. Gubanov is working alongside @MoffittNews to apply the model within the healthcare and cancer treatment fields. To check out the full article, visit: fla.st/5XXNLUMZ. @FSUResearch @FloridaState

Assistant Professor in @FSUComputerSci Xiaonan Zhang (slide one) and her research team have won the Best Paper Runner-Up Award at the @IEEEorg / @TheOfficialACM 2026 Conference on Connected Health: Applications, Systems and Engineering Technologies! Led by Zhang's doctoral student Hansong Zhou (slide two), the paper explores AI's ability to act as a "coach," encouraging users to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Health behavioral change is inherently a long-term process, and sustained improvements in physical activity, diet, and sleep require continued support over time," Zhou said. "Our work examines how AI-based health coaching can maintain continuity across multiple sessions by tracking an individual's goals, progress, and barriers, while proactively guiding subsequent conversations."
