🧮 The math behind Ranked Choice Voting is clear — and it is why so many volunteers across Michigan are fighting for this reform.
This article breaks down what the numbers show. Under our current winner take all system, a candidate can win even if most voters preferred someone else. In races with more than two candidates, that system is up to fifteen times more likely to produce a spoiler outcome. It is also about fifty percent more likely to elect a candidate with narrow or extreme support instead of someone most voters can agree on.
Ranked Choice Voting fixes that by letting voters rank candidates. If your first choice cannot win, your vote moves to your next choice. That simple change makes the math work for the majority rather than the loudest minority.
Here is what the data tells us:
• More votes actually count
• Spoilers drop dramatically
• Candidates have to reach beyond their base
• Winners reflect broad support instead of a fractured field
This is why our grassroots movement is growing. People can see the numbers for themselves. When the math is this straightforward, the solution is too.

“Ranked choice voting helps a party unify around the most competitive candidate without fracturing the party. In crowded primaries, the incentive is to tear each other down. With #RankedChoiceVoting the incentive is flipped.”

Democratic politicians and activists are quietly lobbying for ranked choice voting, which would change the future of the party’s primaries.
