April 2014. Election season. Narendra Modi, Gujarat CM and BJP’s prime ministerial face, finally sits down with Doordarshan after years of alleged blackout. He tells the interviewer Gujarat poured maximum revenue into DD, yet the national broadcaster kept its distance. He speaks “only for the sake of democracy.” The interview runs nearly an hour. Sircar says he himself gave the green signal to telecast despite no “balancing interview” from the other side. The letter becomes public. The shadow over the public broadcaster is confirmed by its own CEO. Modi later tweets on Press Freedom Day that the national channel is “struggling to maintain its professional freedom.” The interview that was meant to end a blackout instead opens a fresh chapter on who controls the microphone.
