While Asif Ali Zardari was imposing Governor's Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in consultation with Nawaz Sharif, a family in Karachi—comprising five members, including two children—was engaged in a similar kind of mutual consultation: a discussion on taking their own lives because they lacked the money even for food. Just as the political decision to impose an emergency was deliberated upon, the elders of this family weighed the option of suicide due to poverty, debt, unemployment, and the inability to secure bread. Driven by depression, anxiety, and the harsh realities of economic inequality, they concluded that they held no worth or standing in the eyes of this cruel system and its operators; thus, departing from this world was the best option—a course of action they ultimately chose. The family administered poison to the children, while the adults ended their lives by shooting themselves; those who passed away first had sheets draped over them by those who followed... Before this, they wrote a long letter addressed to us, explaining that they lacked the funds to refill their gas cylinder or buy milk for the children. They had been shunned and distanced by all their close relatives (though how much can one blame them? They, too, are living in the same poverty). They also penned a tale of grievances against their own kin... The tragedy is simply that precious children were lost, and this will not be the last such incident. Yet, when someone points out that roughly half of the region's poorest population belongs to this country, you can calmly inform them that the world acknowledges our role as mediators, that we have taken charge of defending friendly nations, and that our economic conditions are—any moment now—about to improve, for investment is just around the corner!
