"Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends & your sister star in it. Put your name on it as director. Now you’re a director. Everything after that you’re just negotiating your budget & your fee." – James Cameron

A visionary recognizes that it's not "what" they see, but the "way" they see it that that matters most.

No matter what stage you are at as a filmmaker... Every film has limitations – financially, creatively or otherwise. The difference between those that fail and those that succeed lie in the filmmaker’s abilities to embrace those limitations and not fight them.

"A style is not a matter of camera angles or fancy footwork, it’s an expression, an accurate expression of your particular opinion." – Karel Reisz
While it goes without saying that your film needs to be executable from a practical standpoint, that should never come at the expense of quality or substance.

"To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong." - Joseph Chilton Pearce
All artists must work within some form of confines, some boundaries or limits... The painter within the limits of the canvas, the musician within the time of a single song, the filmmaker within the frame, the actor within the stage... Limits are merely the edges of our canvas.

Each stage of the writing process will pose it’s own set of challenges, but in the end it’s up to you to use those challenges as a means to strengthen your film.

For every logistical snag that you run into when writing your screenplay, it’s up to you to find a solution that not only solves the problem, but also elevates your film to new heights.

Life is like art, there is no one right way to do it. To make a masterpiece out of either of them the only way to go about it is to go your own way.

You will always be balancing your ability to write a feature film that is feasible to shoot on a micro-budget, but in many ways that is also what will make it so interesting to watch. Use this balancing act as a chance to try out things you never would having all the resources.
"The directing of a picture involves coming out of your individual loneliness and taking a controlling part in putting together a small world. A picture is made. You put a frame around it and move on. And one day you die. That is all there is to it." – John Huston
"One of the great things about being a director as a life choice is that it can never be mastered. Every story is its own kind of expedition, with its own set of challenges." – Ron Howard
In developing a story on a micro scale, you have more creative options in some regards (story, character, theme) & less in other regards (locations, effects, cast), so the more clearly you can define the parameters in which you’re working, the more successful the process will be.
"Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends & your sister star in it. Put your name on it as director. Now you’re a director. Everything after that you’re just negotiating your budget & your fee." – James Cameron
"The biggest mistake in student films is that they are usually cast so badly, with friends & people the directors know." – Brian De Palma
