Students wrapped up our Political Process unit by creating mind maps. 🧠🗺 These 5 made our “Make Yourself Proud” board- such great thinking serves as a great role model for peers looking to make edits to their own work! 🏅 @GlasgowMS @FCPSR2 @FcpsSocial

#sschat A5: The Content vs. Skill divide is a myth. False binary. They act together. We develop skills using social studies content. And as skills are practiced more content is understood because students think about it.

A3: Would also highly recommend Visible Learning strategies to help students move from surface to deep learning #sschat

#sschat A3: Scaffold thinking by tapping into students lived experiences, provide everyday examples, and use disciplinary terms - if you want students to go deep in any field you must use that discipline's terminology.

A2: Making sure that students know what we are doing, why we are doing it, and how it actually makes them better at ____ skill. We can't treat them as individual items, content and skill have to go together. #sschat

A1. I think the most challenging skill to teach is having students notice author bias in primary and secondary sources and not take everything that is written down in history as some form of written in stone law. #sschat #educ331 #pstpln

What’s the first thing historians do when they read a document? They consider the source. Teach students this historical thinking skill with our intro materials. 🧵 1/3

🇺🇸Memorial Day & Veterans Day are often confused for one another and can be easily misunderstood. Both honor the military community, however, these two federal holidays couldn’t be more different. Take a moment to learn about the difference: uso.org/stories/2522-underst…

Our State Delegate @MarkSicklesVA stopped by @FCPSHayfieldSS this morning to chat with and hear from Seniors. He visited four Government classes and fielded a wide range of great questions from our students. Thank you for visiting!
