Today, we honour the heroes of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Yet, 70 years later, Hungary once again has political prisoners, and a new authoritarian regime reminiscent of the communist era is taking shape. It is a painful betrayal of the legacy of 1956 that these anniversaries continue to be overshadowed by abuses of power. In 2006, on the 50th anniversary, the then left-wing government used brutal police force to crack down on peaceful commemorators. Twenty years later, those in power are once again turning to intimidation and repression. Political persecution, imprisonment and intimidation are becoming the hallmarks of the Tisza government’s growing authoritarianism. With the tacit support of Brussels, the government is dismantling democracy and the rule of law, while cynically hailing it as “regime change.” We will not remain silent. We stand with those facing political persecution and will continue to resist authoritarianism. This is what the legacy of 1956 and the cause of Hungarian freedom demand of us.

Today, on the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, we honour the heroes who rose up against communist oppression, sacrificing their lives for our nation’s freedom and independence. Their courage and unwavering love of freedom remind us Hungarians to this day that freedom is a legacy every generation has a duty to protect and preserve. Gloria Victis! How did Europe come to this? Failed migration policies have put our citizens’ safety at risk. We need a patriotic shift to protect Europe’s external borders and the safety of our citizens. The EU budget must serve Europeans and restore competitiveness, rather than fund more centralisation. And as we mark the 70th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 Revolution, there are once again political prisoners in our country as a means of intimidation. Yet the EU institutions remain silent.

One of the most absurd examples of Hungary’s growing authoritarianism: former State Secretary Veronika Varga-Bajusz is being prosecuted as a “psychological accomplice”. Today, her pre-trial detention was upheld. There is no legal basis for her detention. This is nothing but political intimidation, sending a clear warning to every Hungarian: anyone who refuses to bow to those in power can be branded a “psychological accomplice”, even if innocent. This is what the Tisza government has turned Hungary into. Shameful! We in Fidesz stand with all those unjustly detained and will use every means at our disposal to fight against authoritarianism!

Patriots stand with the people of Ceuta. The crisis in Ceuta is a stark warning to all of Europe and a direct consequence of failed migration policies. A continent that cannot defend its borders cannot protect its people or secure its future. With leaders like @Santi_ABASCAL, @J_Bardella, and Patriots across Europe, we stand united to stop illegal migration, defend Europe’s borders and protect the security of our citizens.

. @vonderleyen admitted in her SOTEU speech that they interfered in the Hungarian elections on the side of the Tisza Party. In her own words, the April 12 election is one “that will stay in our memory for a very long time”, and its outcome proves that “hard work pays off”. She then cited the Commission’s intervention in Hungary as a success to argue that rule-of-law conditionality — used as a tool of political pressure — should play a central role in the EU’s next seven-year budget.
