My autism was mislabeled as... Friendly but weird... annoying... self-centered... too much... not enough... introverted... finicky... overly sensitive... talks too much... smart but... capable but... [insert positive attribute here] but...... (there's always a but)

my preference is autistic and I try not to get into function as I know from experience I do have days that my functioning isnโ€™t as good as others and that my former life took a lot of energy and masking to get anywhere

So much of those comments are insulting. Another one is people assuming a person can't be autistic if they're able to use social media. Uh, deaf & other disabled people also use social media...but I doubt they consider that.

Classic example of why someone should never underestimate an autistic person. So many parents don't know how to react when autistic people speak up for ourselves. Social media gave us a platform to do just that & share information that can help others.

Yep. Many autistic people have to distance ourselves from something that causes a major emotional reaction. Not because we don't care but because someone else's pain or sadness can be overwhelming.

These parents have no idea. I was blocked the other day by 3 women who support ABA. One of them had been fighting & blocking autistic people on Twitter for since 2019! Autistic adults were trying to explain that ABA wouldn't help her daughter but her reply was extremely rude.

I say this all the time: people have absolutely no problem with the concept that I as a disabled person am different from them. Where they get very confused and sometimes defensive is when I remind them that means they are also different from me.
Whether youโ€™re aiding a child or an adult, this is so important!!! Thatโ€™s the whole point of accounts like mine: to educate and encourage compassion. #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #ADHD

Absolutely. Itโ€™s an understandable โ€œexplanationโ€ of how neurotypical people might perceive a change in an autistic child when they had no understanding of it.

Diary of a painfully shy introvert. Autism as a female and having mental heath issues alongside diagnosis. Also, goes into the day to day issues of society not understanding, acting cold towards me and refusing to adjust. emma-lucy-thomson.net

It took my parents almost 10 years to accept my autism diagnosis. Unfortunately I'm not convinced they still are..

Yes. I know at least three generations of my family have been autistic. Possibly four, looking at my brother's kids.

I dont think the worst thing that could happen to me is raising a autistic child. I think the worst thing that could happen to me is raising a child who could be cruel to a autistic child.

Some autistic people are non verbal. Non verbal does not mean non-intelligent. Being unable to communicate verbally does not mean they don't have a voice or opinions. It certainly does not mean that their life is worth any less.

Just because one person can cope really well with their struggles, that doesn't mean that everyone else can cope with their struggles to the same extent. Everyone copes differently. #mentalhealth

As a high functioning Autistic, one of the most frustrating things is having to feel like I constantly need to mask my emotions in order to conform, or to keep the peace either with neuro typical people, or even family. TO ALL โฌ‡๏ธ WE NEED ACCEPTANCE!๐Ÿ‘‚ #autism #ActuallyAutistic โ€“ at North East, England

How autism and ADHD can mask each other: a thread. Autism and ADHD can termorarily balance each other out and make them more invisible. This compensation can lessen with age and that's when they start to manifest more visibly (hence, late diagnosis). Let's see some examples.
