Let’s help people save seamlessly over a career.
3 ideas:
1. Stop the slowdown: make savings rates portable
2. Scrap the fine print: shorten eligibility & vesting timelines
3. Nudge better at exit: preserve and consolidate assets.

How 'auto features' can help with retirement savings
Those closer to retirement exhibited more jitters. The typical investor who sold stocks was 56 yrs old, considerably older than those who were net buyers of stocks (43) or who did not trade at all (48).
While the last 3 trading days have tested the markets and investors’ jitters, the vast majority of Vanguard self-directed US retail clients stayed invested (93%).
Of those who did trade, the majority bought into equities (5:1 ratio of net buyers vs sellers of equities).

I was just informed that the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee (FESAC), of which I was a member, was terminated abruptly and all upcoming meetings are also canceled. This was a committee that has been around since at least 2000.
We were a group of experts from academia and policy (including folks like @DAcemogluMIT who was on it until recently) who met twice a year to advise BEA, BLS, Census, and the Commerce department on matters related to federal economic statistics.
We were all volunteers serving on the committee without any compensation because we wanted to help federal agencies who were already facing serious issues due to budget cuts. I fail to see how this will result in any cost savings.

Job switches shouldn’t slow retirement savings. Workers need to save & invest for retirement even as they switch jobs. 3 ideas.
1. Maintain savings momentum.
2. Relax eligibility & vesting requirements.
3. Improve choice architecture at job exits.

Job transitions slow retirement savings. Workers see a 10% increase in pay but a 0.7 ppt decline in their saving rate when they switch employers. Low default savings rates in 401(k) plans are part of the problem. Covered by @annetergesen @WSJ.

Solution: Make Target Date Funds the default. Policy allows this in 401(k)s.

401(k) plans often have vesting schedules for employer contributions. Despite their prevalence, we know little about the effect of these provisions.
With @aaron_s_goodman, we ask:
1. Does vesting keep workers at firms?
2. How does it affect 401(k) wealth?
