LIRR and Metro-North ridership surged within New York City limits after the MTA expanded $5 peak/$7 off-peak intracity fares in 2022 — driving the bulk of ridership growth on the two commuter railroads.

The parking lot of this appliance store in Long Island City, Queens was purchased for $53 million, or $444,000 per parking space. It will become a 26 story building with 560 housing units, of which 25% will be affordable. The opportunity cost of surface parking is insane.

The ability to just *walk out the door* and skip the car feels so basic. But when you’re in the suburbs and going anywhere means driving, you appreciate the fundamental privilege of the city, which is proximity to destinations
Last week, friends with young kids came to visit us from the suburbs in California.
As we ran around Manhattan together, they looked at us and asked, “How do you do this all the time? How do you raise young kids in New York City? Do you have to get in the car every time you go somewhere? This seems crazy.”
I smiled and told them that, for us, raising kids in the city is actually easier than raising them in the suburbs.
We never think about getting in the car.
The grocery store is two blocks away. The kids’ doctor is two blocks away. There’s a Barnes & Noble six minutes away on foot.
We walk to the Met, the Natural History Museum, and Central Park.
We walk to get coffee. There are playgrounds and playdates everywhere. Our building is full of kids their age, and so is our block.
Once you get past the idea that raising kids in the city must be complicated, the day-to-day reality is pretty simple.
We just walk out the door.
And honestly, raising kids in the city is actually a whole lot easier than raising them in the suburbs.

Road pricing + the Lincoln Tunnel Express Bus Lane helped reintroduce for-profit mass transit back into NYC as a viable business
It's fun to have nimble startups like Boxcar analyzing & advocating bus infrastructure improvements alongside traditional large public agencies 👇

In the time it takes a train to get from New York to Washington, you can get from Paris to Provence - twice as far.
I mapped every rail station you can reach from central Paris and central New York in 1, 2, and 3 hours.
Two hours from Paris gets you to Lyon, Strasbourg, or Nantes. Two hours from Midtown gets you to Wilmington.
Paris to London, under the Channel, is a slightly longer trip than New York to Washington. The train is 40 minutes faster. Washington only makes the 3-hour cutoff on one train a day.
It isn't about distance. France has built dedicated high-speed lines out of Paris since 1981, and TGVs run them at 186 mph. The Northeast Corridor shares track with commuter trains and runs through century-old tunnels. Acela only hits top speed on short stretches.
The Northeast has the cities and the riders for this. Every hop on the corridor, even Boston to New York, is shorter than Paris to Lyon. What it doesn't have is track built for speed.

ALT Two maps at the same scale showing how far scheduled trains reach from central Paris and central New York in 1, 2, and 3 hours. Paris reaches 133, 251, and 399 miles; New York reaches 55, 120, and 205 miles. Labeled cities include Lyon in 1h 54m, London in 2h 19m, Philadelphia in 1h 08m, and Washington in 2h 59m.

Working on parking options for a Very Complex project.
One parking option that I kind of love is a shared parking facility per block. This means people who WANT a parking spot can lease it in the garage. People who don't want to can opt out and spend their money elsewhere.
A garage on the block is convenient ... you can get to it by going out your back door and crossing the courtyard to the garage.
(this garage is for 200 spots -- doesn't need to be this big)
Spending decades studying is a feature, not a bug, to leaders who want to look like they're "doing something" without actually changing anything.

Much less studies. For example, Madrid metro didn’t do a full environmental study for their metro expansion because public transit is already a environmental good.

Before being rolled out, people are opposed to the idea in theory.
But after experiencing how great it is in practice, they become really supportive.

BREAKING: America’s $1.7 trillion auto loan market is headed for a crash, per Reuters.
Auto loans are now one of the biggest sources of household debt, bigger than credit cards.
And the strain is showing: 1 in 5 Americans is behind on at least one loan, the highest since 2010, and the average car on the road is now nearly 13 years old, a record.

Car fanatics want us to believe that car-dominance is because customers love cars.
But choices reveal desires only when there are real options.
