No one wants to admit it, but the best way to bring true equalisation to the AFL is to allow teams to trade players without consent.
How's a team meant to rise from the bottom of the ladder when it's completely acceptable that a club captain & a vital big man from two bottom 4 teams can walk out so easily & sign for a team that's won two consecutive GFs with zero shame?
New rules like that would give struggling teams a puncher's chance at building a list they want, but the ensuring backlash would make it an incredibly tough sell.
Still, I truly believe it would put all teams on a level playing field

Reading comments from supporters on players we’re linked with it’s very clear soooo many expectations were/are misdirected. We were never attracting A/B graders. It’s about glowing up, even marginally, on what we’ve got.

Healthy competition for spots is crucial. Right now Riccardi is the better & more versatile player IMO.
However, a lot can happen over the course of a preseason.
Riccardi was averaging just under 30 goals a season in the three years heading into 2026.
Below is the comparison between their two injury-impacted 2026 seasons.
They share similar numbers, but there's a few stats that stand out for Riccardi (on the right):
- He doubles May's average disposals per game
- He can run through the ruck & make an impact
- He uses the ball more effectively
- He averaged almost two more score involvements per game
