It started because of Jim, it continues because of you - 12 years of impact
Powered by Partnership, Sustained by You
For 12 years, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation has transformed loss into purpose, building a safer future for journalists and defending press freedom. With support from committed partners, we've expanded journalist safety education, reaching newsrooms and universities across the country and helping reporters navigate an increasingly complex threat landscape.
Now we're helping lead the next evolution in journalist safety.
With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation (@knightfdn), we are developing Reporting with Resilience, an online journalist safety toolkit that extends safety beyond physical protection. Designed for freelancers, students, and under-resourced newsrooms,
Reporting with Resilience supports journalists who increasingly face burnout, trauma, online harassment, intimidation, and other mental health challenges that can affect their well-being and ability to do their work. The initiative places emotional well-being at the center of journalist safety, providing practical tools, peer support, case studies, and additional resources.
Grant partners help us launch ambitious initiatives, and individual donors help sustain them. As we celebrate 12 years of protecting journalists and strengthening press freedom, we invite you to help shape the Foundation's next chapter. Please consider making an anniversary gift today at jamesfoleyfoundation.org/don….

Day 3,770 of injustice for Ahmadreza Djalali. Over 10 years ago, in April 2016, he was wrongfully arrested in Iran. Cut off from family and facing an ongoing threat of execution, his health is failing. Iran must halt this injustice. #SaveAhmadreza @araghchi @MariaStenergard

PRESS RELEASE:
David Levinson Named Chair of James W. Foley Legacy Foundation Board of Directors
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation announced today that David Levinson has been unanimously elected as Chair of its Board of Directors, succeeding Ellen Shearer after four years of leadership in the role.
David Levinson, the Foundation's newly elected Board Chair, said:
“This mission is especially personal to me. When my father was taken, my family learned how isolating and overwhelming it can be to fight for someone you love while navigating systems that were not fully prepared for the crisis in front of them. I know what it means for a family to need both compassion and determined advocacy, and to need a government and institutions willing to learn, improve, and be held accountable.”

At 74, American veteran Stephen Hubbard is growing weaker & sicker in a Russian prison.
He was in perfect health when he was captured in April. 2022. Since then, his health has plummeted. Stephen now has an enlarged heart. Former prisoners have described serious health problems, along with beatings & torture.
Steve’s sister, Trisha, in Jan. 2026 sent President Trump a letter urging him to free her brother. @SecRubio knows Steve by name as he is the only American designated “wrongfully detained” in Russia.

As the on/off conflict between Iran & U.S. continues, one critical crisis remains largely ignored - the wrongful detention of innocent Americans by the Iranian regime. This certainly is not for a lack of trying by their families, advocates, & NGOs who have tried to elevate their cases. @POTUS is once again citing progress in talks - @SEPeaceMissions should include the front-end release of Kamran Hekmati and Reza Valizadeh & the other innocent detainees during any and all diplomatic efforts with Iran. It's the right thing to do & it's what @realDonaldTrump has said he wants.

The president said he agreed to requests from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to cancel the attack, citing progress in talks.

4 years ago today, 🇺🇸 teacher Alina Lopez walked out of a Cuban prison, but her ordeal was far from over. Arrested in Jan. 2017, she was released on July 8, 2022, but remains unable to leave Cuba due to a travel ban.
An American civilian convicted by a Cuban military court, Alina has now lost more than 9 years of her life. During that time, she was unable to return home to be with her parents before they passed away. In 2022, the UNWGAD concluded that her detention was arbitrary (Opinion No. 37/2022).
Freedom is not complete while Alina remains banned from returning home to her loved ones. Hostage Aid continues to urge the #USG to find a path toward resolving Alina's case & bringing her home.

Today we celebrate 11 years since the issuance of Presidential Policy Directive 30 (PPD-30), which established the hostage enterprise. It ordered the creation of the Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell (HRFC), the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA), and formed the Hostage Response Group (HRG). This directive placed a priority on bringing home hostages and supporting their loved ones through their unjust captivity.

The Foley Foundation is grateful for the continued attention from the press on Americans unjustly held abroad. In an exchange with Kristen Welker of Meet the Press, the President expressed uncertainty as to whether Americans are being held by the Iranian regime.
Extensive public reporting indicates that multiple Americans are unjustly held in Iran, including Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati—both formally designated by the administration as wrongfully detained—along with at least three additional cases we are tracking. Some outlets have reported as many as six in total. We have shared the details of the cases we know directly with @StateDept and @NSC.
The administration has rightly designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention, reflecting its long-standing pattern of hostage-taking of Americans. This designation applies when Americans are actively held by foreign governments.
Amid renewed tensions and ceasefire violations, however, these cases risk being overshadowed. For families, every public signal matters—and many are understandably concerned.
We respectfully urge sustained action to secure the release of all Americans held in Iran. Their loved ones are counting on continued U.S. leadership to bring them home.

Can you please help me get this message to @kwelkernbc @MeetThePress? We need to make sure she knows the names of our Americans being wrongfully detained in Iran. During her interview yesterday w/@POTUS @realDonaldTrump, he said “if you give me the names I’ll do my best to get them home.” HUGE missed opportunity that Kristen Welker did not at least tell him the names of Kamran Hekmati and Reza Valizadeh. Both have been wrongfully detained in Iran, Kamran since 2025 and Reza since 2024, & both have been designated as such by @SecRubio @StateSPEHA. Reza & Kamran are not the only ones - there are other Americans also being detained in Iran whose cases aren’t public We need to make sure that journalists like Kristen Welker know this. @JamesFoleyFund is tracking these cases and is a great resource. – at Washington, DC
