Being Man in India

IF YOU WANT MEN TO TALK, LISTEN WHEN THEY DO. Every November, we hear the same advice about men's mental health: "Men need to open up." Fair enough. But there's a question we don't ask nearly enough which is: What happens when they actually do? Because telling men to talk is easy but being willing to hear what they have to say can be a whole lot harder. When a man finally opens up, it might come out as anger, frustration, fear, embarrassment, or an admission that he feels like he's failing. Maybe he's going through a devastating divorce, fighting for time with his children, trapped in a job he can't afford to leave, or drowning in financial pressure nobody knows about. Maybe he's miserable in his relationship or simply lonely. Or maybe all he can manage is, "Man, I'm not doing very well." What happens next matters. He doesn't need a lecture, an immediate correction, or somebody telling him others have it worse. He doesn't need his problems turned into a competition. Sometimes he just needs someone to listen. Movember's guidance makes much the same point: ask what's going on, listen without judgment, encourage action when appropriate, and check in again later. That last part matters because struggling men don't always look like they're struggling. He's still going to work, paying the bills, cracking jokes, and showing up for everyone else. But maybe he's become quieter, stopped answering messages, or lost interest in things he once enjoyed. Those changes can be signs that something isn't right. So this November, think about your father, brother, son, coworker, or the buddy you haven't heard from lately. Call him. Invite him for coffee. Ask how he's doing, and actually listen to the answer. You don't need to solve every problem or have all the answers. Sometimes being heard is what matters most. If we're going to keep telling men to talk, we need to be willing to listen when they do.
