The habit of inviting the entire world to chime in on your every personal interaction to judge “who was right or wrong” is a destructive and nasty one that no civilized person should cultivate.

We LOVED getting these on deployment. Kids would draw the wildest stuff and teachers clearly weren't reviewing them. They would draw Army men shooting people and blood coming out and then it would say "I hope you don't die." Everyone looked forward to getting them.
There is nothing more earnest or unhinged than kids’ letters to the troops

Scientists have identified the specific male dance movements that women find most attractive Researchers from Northumbria University mapped out the exact body mechanics that signal health, vigor, and reproductive quality to female observers.

Look, I'm in Ecuador right now. I know the rules. I have to leave in 5 months or get a visa. If I stay for 20 years without doing that, I'm not "in limbo"; I've actively chosen to do something retarded – at Duran, Ecuador

Teenagers really are like AI agents. You need to give them very specific detailed prompts to get them to do what you want and they’re still gonna find a way to hallucinate BS anyway.

I rule nothing out entirely, especially if you include “has EVER existed.” 😄 History is long, and we know much much less about the dim past than we think we know.

I think there is a huge difference between the “MY birthday is a BIG DEAL” types, and the ones who just like to throw massive parties and their birthday is as good an excuse as any. Whole different vibe. 😄
The only defense I have for adults who throw big birthdays for themselves is that *a small subset* are actually great ladies who recognize that they're the natural event organizer in the friend group and everybody loves it when they make a weekend itinerary appear like magic

If you are not going to take steps (painful tho they may be) to make it easier for your kids to help you, then you need to have other measures in place (usually expensive ones) where you’ll not need much of their help. One of the reasons we moved back to SC (where aaallll the fam is), besides genuinely wanting to be closer and help with grands and stuff, is we knew old age was bearing down fast. And eventually it will not be “Nana, can you pick Jack up from school and keep him til I’m done with Dela’s appt?” It will be, among our sundry younger relatives “Who is checking on Nana today?”

I've begged my elderly parents to move in with us. No downsize to a safer house. No. Move closer to us. No. Now Dad's in the hospital, Mom needs a ride home and someone to stay overnight, and I have to work tomorrow and get my kids ready for school. This was entirely preventable. I've offered every reasonable solution, and they've refused them all. Older generations, you cannot insist on doing everything your way and then expect your adult children to rearrange their lives to make it work…

I have told all the young people in my family that, when looking for a mate, the list of positives you desire is important, as is the list of dealbreakers. You know what’s just as important? And that few do? The list of flaws that, while they may not be pleasant, you could pretty much tolerate those with some grace. None of us are going to marry perfection, and EVERY partner will have flaws. No, I do not mean “other ppl view that as a flaw but it doesn’t bug me.” I mean real genuine things that WILL bug you. And yes, all men/women should work on those in a marriage. But it is wise to know yourself well enough to know what flaws would make you crazy miserable to the point of threatening the marriage, and which flaws you might bitch and moan and sigh about, but could pretty much suck up *even if that never changed*. And if you think you are going to have a long marriage without encountering “Ima just have to suck it up” you are living in fantasy land. Make your list of tolerable flaws. The stuff you maybe wouldn’t love, but with which you could probably deal without massive effort. It’s a great exercise in self-knowledge if nothing else. If you find yourself unable to name “things I’d not like at all, but up with which I could put” then you need to climb down off your high horse before you’re ready for marriage.

I feel the same way about celebrity conversions. Very glad they found God, now LEAVE THEM ALONE with (hopefully) a real and loving and genuine local church family around them to grow in peace. They are not your damn trophy of the faith.

Prostitute-to-church pipeline is indeed how it’s supposed to work. Prostitute-to-immediate-teaching-and-leadership, however, is not. Some of the church’s greatest saints have been murderers and harlots. They were not, however, canonized the week after their baptism. And you do an unloving disservice not only to the church but **to baby converts themselves** when you immediately thrust them into public prominence.
The prostitute-to-church pipeline is HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO BE YOU PIECE OF SMUG SELF-RIGHTEOUS SHIT

We decided years ago to simply stop making sides with some meals. The big one was ribs. Because everyone pigged out on the ribs and never ate a bit of the sides. So we just accepted that reality, chose not to pretend, and rib night is aaallll ribs now.
me: ok lunch is tri tip me: oh and grilled bell peppers and pasta for those who want son: YEAH RIGHT YOU WILL STUFF YOUR FACE WITH MEAT AND EAT NOTHING ELSE he's right. it was delicious

I have tons of sympathy for ppl who’ve been victimized. Do whatever you need to do to protect yourself and manage that fear and pain. But understand that your template is not the template for the vast majority of families, and should not be the cautionary frame into which they must all be stuffed. Trauma is not the norm, and excessively guarding against it is not the *primary* function of families, and only serves to twist otherwise healthy families and instill unwarranted fear into children who were not, actually, at risk at all in that family. It is GOOD for children to trust their family in a manner that they do not extend to strangers. Can that trust be violated? Yes. And it’s horrible when it happens. But raising children to NOT trust their own family, while it might avoid that particular circumstance, does not make them healthy and strong. It cripples them in other ways.

People do get abused and traumatized. It’s very sad and wrong. Maybe what that person needs to do in order to feel safe changes after that - and that’s their business. But the solution to YOUR trauma is not to force everyone in the entire world to behave as if trauma is imminently looming in perfectly normal interactions.

Yes. And again, none of this is bcz women are not capable of those tasks, or should not do them if need be. We can and should. A man, if he puts his organized mind to it, is more than capable of keeping track of and managing the social schedule. But for most men/women, there is stuff that is more our instinctive bent, and defaulting to those norms is not wrong or “unequal” - it’s just EASIER most of the time. Real outliers may have to do some negotiating - but guess what? Most ppl are not outliers on multiple axes, so defaulting to norms is just more efficient and less stress for both.

Gender role task norms are neither some ironclad law to be enforced, nor some “inequality” to be chafed against. All they are is the distillation of what works and has worked best for *most* men/women over time. They are shortcuts to avoid having to negotiate EVERY little thing from scratch, then begrudgingly wind up at the old way anyway, except with everyone a bit mad and stressed. 😆
