Do you remember when Fairies used to cause major disruption to roads? No not me and me husband in July. In 1999, engineers building a motorway through County Clare found themselves facing an occult obstacle no survey had flagged. A single hawthorn tree, standing alone in a field at Latoon, just outside Newmarket-on-Fergus.
Lone hawthorns are not to be fecked with. Cut down as part of a hedgerow, they're just trees. But solo in open ground, they become a sceach, a fairy bush, believed to mark the meeting point of ancient fairy paths or bealaí sí.
These are the invisible routes the Aos Sí travel between one stronghold and the next. Interfere with one, and you invite misfortune. Interfere with one sitting on a fairy path, and you're inviting a supernatural shitstorm.
The Latoon bush had the misfortune of standing right in the path of the planned N18. Road crews arrived to clear it when word reached Eddie Lenihan, a seanchaí who'd spent decades collecting stories like this one from farmers and neighbours across Munster.
A local had once told him this particular bush marked a meeting ground between the fairy hosts of Munster and Connacht. This was some inter Provincial business. Disturbing it wouldn't just curse whoever swung the chainsaw. It would curse the road itself.
Lenihan went to the press and story went international. And somewhere along the line, the people actually responsible for building a motorway through Clare decided the safer bet was to build around a bush rather than risk finding out whether an angry crowd of nationwide Fay folk could really enforce some fairy FAFO.
The N18 was redrawn and what should have been a straightforward stretch of motorway ended up delayed for close to ten years while the alignment was reworked to leave the tree untouched. When it finally opened as the M18, the hawthorn was still standing exactly where it always had, in the median strip near junction 11, close enough to the tarmac that trucks doing a hundred kilometres an hour pass within a few metres of it every day.

This is every person and organisation involved in the St John Ambulance Ireland abuse case that's on the record. 39 people and 18 organisations over six decades, all around one abuser.
I disclosed in 1999. St John Ambulance didn't make a child protection referral about my complaint until 2012. It was then lost, and only found by Tusla in 2018.
The DPP declined to prosecute in five cases. When he was finally charged in 2025, he was found unfit to stand trial. A public inquiry was ruled out. The only independent review was commissioned by St John Ambulance itself, on terms it set, and could reach no conclusions about any individual.
Look at where the decision-makers sit. The DPP, the regulators and the Ministers are at the very edge. The officers I disclosed to have no link to any State body. The connections that do exist were made by survivors and a handful of TDs and Senators who raised it for us.
And this map only shows what we already know. The real picture is bigger.
Nobody has been held to account.
Please share this map. The more people see how big this is, the harder it is to ignore.

For over 20 years, Patricia O’Regan has provided 24-hour care for her 30-year-old son Seán, who lives with Pans/Pandas, a complex autoimmune condition that causes severe OCD and impacts his motor skills. Because full-time caregiving prevented her from returning to work, Patricia now faces retirement with no income of her own and total dependence on her husband's pension. Despite decades of round-the-clock dedication, she was offered respite care for the first time only last year, highlighting a stark reality for the three in four Irish carers who have never received a break. As the Government prepares the upcoming budget, Patricia is advocating for the abolition of the Carer’s Allowance means test, increased respite funding, and a future-planning taskforce so long-term caregivers aren't left financially vulnerable.

On this International Day of Older Persons 2026, themed “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” Care Champions stands resolutely with older persons, their families, and advocates to demand a fundamental transformation in how aging is valued and supported. Living longer must mean living with dignity, autonomy, and equality, not simply adding years to life, but ensuring healthy, meaningful life in those extra years.
Rethinking our systems requires us to confront systemic failings head-on:
Institutional care must never mean a compromise on dignity, personal liberty, or joy. Human rights are not given up at the door when moving into residential care. When providers fail HIQA inspections, there must be real, enforceable accountability rather than repeated non-compliance without consequence. Every resident deserves an environment centered on high-quality, compassionate, and person-led care.
Older persons face persistent gaps in legislative safeguarding, leaving them vulnerable to harm without adequate legal protections. We demand robust, enforceable safeguarding frameworks and equal access to justice, ensuring older adults can exercise their rights, seek legal recourse, and have their voices heard without discrimination or barrier.
True equality demands a statutory right to comprehensive home care and accessible primary healthcare. No older person should be forced into institutional residential care simply because community-based support services are unavailable or underfunded.
No older person should face financial strain or poverty in their later years. State budgets must directly address the rising cost of living to guarantee adequate pensions and financial supports that enable older adults to live comfortably, securely, and free from economic hardship.
Older adults are active, vital contributors to society. Systems must adapt to provide accessible infrastructure, social protection, and housing that empower every older person to age in place and live full, vibrant lives surrounded by their communities.
Today, we call on policymakers and communities across Ireland and worldwide to move beyond passive recognition and the right words, which means little in reality and build systems where rights are protected, voices are amplified, and every individual can age with dignity, safety, and equality.
