The appointment of Jean Rakotojaona as Archbishop of Fianarantsoa, Madagascar, leaves vacant the titular see of Dragona, which is pretty cool sounding. It's modern Torremaggiore, Foggia province, Italy, which for some reason is a sister city with Buffalo, NY, USA. Who knew?

I gladly accept the upcharge for jalapeños at @HalalGuys or note how good @MezzettaFoods sliced hot cherry peppers are and I'll think about how when we were children we heard about how Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers but we had no idea how wonderful a thing that was.

A friar complimented me on my homily at a recent friar funeral. Except it wasn't a funeral, it was the annual celebration of our jubilarians. Like, I know the organization can seem moribund at times but not *everything* is a funeral bro.

We have a new Capuchin venerable today, Daniele Natale, spiritual son of Padre Pio, who also went to Purgatory and came back to tell the tale. #OFMCapFTW #BuonNatale it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel…

In the case of the first Adam, earth was changed into flesh; in the case of the second Adam, flesh was raised up to be God. ~ St. Peter Chrysologus (Office of Readings)

Let me know if any of this is incorrect… But first, I mostly go to FSSP in the US and ICKSP in Rome. I’ve also spent the last two decades organizing pilgrimages and know all the ins and outs of planning group pilgrimages. Ok, so the Summorum Pontificum pilgrimage NEVER had permission for Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica this year?(Yet they still advertise it on their site.) Their requested date interfered with an already scheduled Mass and lecture on the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis. So they were given the choice between another day or having the Mass at Saint Mary Major. But only yesterday, or maybe today, they told those on the pilgrimage the church had changed? Part of this pilgrimage has always been to visit the tomb of Saint Peter. So when they asked for permission to have the pilgrimage visit the tomb of Saint Peter, they were still told they could not AT THE REQUESTED TIME because of the planned event. This is also still on their website, although they knew months ago? Back in August? And now everyone who likes clicks and controversy is saying the Vatican BANNED them, but really they asked for a date that wasn’t available and wouldn’t agree to change their date, which I completely understand is not easy to do. Last year’s Mass with Cardinal Burke was glorious, but if the basilica is already booked, the basilica is already booked. Right? I also think we should have a high TLM weekly in Saint Peter’s Basilica. ✌️

Truly the unclean, immoral cleric is trampled underfoot like worthless manure. He is saturated with the filth of vice and entangled in the chains of sin. In this condition he must be considered worthless both to himself and to others. ~ St. John of Capistrano (Office of Readings)

Our funeral cantors get some great comments, e.g. "He's better than Josh Groban!" "She's like a Disney Princess!"

Fr. Ripperger has agreed not to give interviews or speak in public for a year, and I say: finally. The priest exorcist should not speak publicly, save in certain controlled situations. And he should never become some sort of media sensation. 1. The Church has for many centuries warned against turning the sacramental into "spectacle." While Ripperger and the celebrity exorcist types stick to the letter of the law by not performing exorcisms publicly, they certainly violate the spirit of it by speaking publicly about their experiences later on. 2. The exorcist ought to be on guard against pride. Though I do not know Fr. Ripperger and would never accuse him of this, being so publicly facing does not aid him. History shows it often goes poorly for celebrity priests in general, so why take the risk when you already have a target on your back? 3. There's a tendency with these guys to claim a kind of gnostic knowledge. It can lead them to say some pretty wild, silly things, even if only in speculation, and silly things mislead the listener while turning the faith into buffoonery. Ripperger is no exception here, and some of his claims are bizarre at best. 4. Curiosity with regard to evil is not a virtue. There are certain things we ought to know and be on guard against, but that's where it ends for the overwhelming majority of priests and faithful alike. It can do real harm to focus on these things, when our attention ought to be on the One who renders evil impotent. 5. The celebrity exorcist tends towards titillation, just like any horror movie, and this serves no one. The sacramental is about healing, not about the (sometimes wild) details. 6. The best exorcists I know will never talk about what they do publicly, and are intentional about this. The reaction on Twitter is the predictable vitriol from the outrage peddlers who often, and very characteristically by the nature of their own grift, misunderstand the true issues at play. I applaud Fr. Ripperger for being outspoken about his beliefs, and for being unapologetic in his defense of the faith. I also appreciate the academic work he has done in this field: it is invaluable. Neither his fortitude nor scholarship is at question here, though. I wish Fr. Ripperger all the best as he focuses on the afflicted and his religious order, and ask that you join me in praying for him.

Cf. Seen in a religious article shop in Rome. You want the boy baby Jesus or the girl baby Jesus? And they say Rome isn't a hotbed of cutting-edge Christology.

so apparently even though delis around here boast about having Boar's Head products they don't have an actual boar's head for me so when my pappardelle al cinghiale is missing some layers of flavor it's on them

Sometimes during my Rome period when Italian friars were being all arrogant like the Order and the faith were basically theirs in a privileged and normative way I would be like bros let's not forget that only 150 years ago your country was at war against the Pope.
