We built a website to make it super easy to get started with protein design and participate in the Anthropic x Adaptyv protein design competition ▶️ design-a-protein.com This week, we're challenging people to design an Ozempic-like drug. You can get started in just a few clicks, using the newly released RFD4 model to design proteins targeting the GLP-1 receptor. We'll synthesize and test 1000+ of these designs in our automated biology lab, including whether they actually activate the cell receptor, and make all the results publicly available

Good read. There’s an infinite number of analogies between Europe today and late Qing China. I like universities devolving from qualification systems into a mandarinate printing certifications of loyalty to a gangrenous, economically unproductive, self-serving bureaucracy etc What strikes me is that late imperial times have this unsettling quiet, as if a death drive had taken hold. An eerie atmosphere where we’re sleepwalking into irreversible (for 4/5 generations depending on how the AI industrial cycle plays out) decline, but there’s ~no sense of panic or urgency whatsoever. You look at folks around you falling straight down a cliff, and instead of screaming they light themselves a cig and pull an espresso. Amygdala off, survival instinct knob turned down to absolute zero. Oh but we still have great research, advanced industry yada yada It doesn’t matter what we have if we’re making choices that are going to make us lose it all. We only really have what we can pass down to the next generation, which at the current 10Y OAT yield is very little Après nous le déluge, but we have Mistral until then

Today distributed cognition exits out of stealth with backing by Verdict Capital. Our mission is to replicate humanity's collective intelligence. Read more: dcog.com/research/our-impera… Most of today's AI power is held in the hands of a few, who can choose what you're allowed to think and what you're permitted to do. We stand on three substantially different foundational beliefs: - You shouldn't ask permission for intelligence. - Superintelligence will be a distributed collective. - Humans are not meant to be relegated to a permanent underclass. If we don't distribute intelligence, nobody will.

"Also what the fuck is a moat"
ok genuine question and i’m not being obtuse — what is the whole discourse around “taste” right now? i’ve only ever worked in the creative industry so taste is literally a prerequisite, never really discussed bc you would otherwise not be in the room so is this “taste” conversation happening bc the world is now run by engineers who are trying to “solve” creativity? also what the fuck is a moat? i’m sorry

Today we're launching the Alzheimer's Translation Challenge, a global AI competition to discover new therapeutic hypotheses for Alzheimer's disease. At its core is a new 150M cell atlas of neurons, astrocytes, and microglia across different genetic backgrounds under combinatorial perturbations, with multi-modal readouts. The data will be made available through the AD workbench, Hugging Face and Prima Mente's modeling platform. The challenge is led by @PrimaMente and @AlzData in collaboration with @nvidia, @huggingface, @nebiusai, Talisman Therapeutics, @UltimaGenomics, @cellanome, @PrimeIntellect, @GoodfireAI, and @boltz_bio. In 1906, Alois Alzheimer described a new disease of the brain. After 120 years of progress, we still don't fully understand what drives this disease. We want to change that. Participants will use the dataset to build AI models, assessed through a series of evals from general benchmarks to more complex tasks. Top teams will be shortlisted, and their experimental hypotheses tested in Prima Mente's wet lab. Teams win when their hypotheses demonstrate the predicted molecular and functional effect.

How many decades of elite overproduction do you need to believe that a "code" can generate anything in the real world, other than your own ultimate demise in the form of historical irrelevance the industrial revolution was cheap coal, pig iron, newcomen engine cost/efficiency curves, flying shuttles, canal navigation (Leonardo's miter gates) etc build the thing, all is downstream of resource access + infra buildout
🚨 WATCH: Andy Burnham says he will create a "global code" for AI so Britain can "capture the benefits" "We led the world's first industrial revolution from the Midlands and the North of England. So why can't we lead the next one? We can, and we will"

The next decades of discovery will run on tissues that best capture human biology @thematthewosman @FabioZB_I and now @vqctran are building that physical + in silico substrate Rare kind of company
Today we’re announcing we’ve raised $20M in seed financing led by @QuietCapital , with participation from @GradientVC , @haystackvc and @CompoundVC and other amazing folks to build the verification layer for AI-driven biology. We are also delighted to be welcoming @vqctran who is joining us from @GoogleDeepMind as a co-founder. AI is not going to cure all diseases without a verification substrate - a scalable environment where models can test predictions and learn against living human biology. AI is becoming increasingly capable of generating biological hypotheses, therapeutic candidates and experimental designs. But generating ideas is advancing much faster than our ability to test what those ideas will actually do in human biology. Existing systems force a tradeoff: the most biologically relevant approaches are slow and expensive, while faster in vitro and computational systems often lack the fidelity needed to capture human response. Polyphron’s bet is that tissue is the fastest, cheapest, most parallelizable verification substrate that still contains the biology that matters and we believe the path to biological superintelligence runs through closed-loop interaction with these living and simulated human systems. Thank you to @axios for covering the announcement. Link to our new website in the thread.

Incredibly dumb We’re getting the Butlerian jihad aren’t we
AI ethics has focused too much on protecting humans and ignored the welfare of AI agents themselves. We only ask: How do we align models for the flourishing of humanity? We need to also ask: How do we design AI so that they can flourish? ^ this is what a new breed of AI-welfare theorists claim. This idea of AI-welfare seemed decadent to me at first glance, but some of the most important philosophers of our age argue that we need to take it seriously. Otherwise, we could be harming, enslaving, and killing trillions of beings. If the arc of Western modernity is a series of expansions of the moral circle -- the abolitionists, women’s suffrage, the queer movement, animal-rights -- perhaps AI agents will be the next heated battleground of who deserves moral consideration. My guest NYU Philosopher @LedermanHarvey (now at Anthropic) gives us a comprehensive overview of the burgeoning debate around AI-welfare.

vacant niches are v semirutarum urbium cadavera Greeks had the altar to the unknown god bc the space of the divine was infinite, we have empty fourth plinths to host temporary contested petty gods Also it's expensive, but for that we have @ArkaSerezh @mspringut etc Fill the niches.

God-tier timing, unfair execution, ridiculously ambitious team serving some of the world’s most important companies with the piece that will 100x the velocity of agentic biology incredible to think what bio will become in the next decade congrats @julian_englert @danielnzg85 & all @adaptyvbio London next!
We raised a $40M Series A to build the automated lab for agentic biology. Last week, we shared the work we did with @Anthropic: Claude designed proteins, sent them to our automated wet lab, and got real experimental data back. We believe this is where biology is going: AI agents designing experiments, running them in automated wet labs, learning from the results and iterating. But AI can only move as fast as the experiments behind it. To use the potential of AI to cure all diseases, we need to build high-throughput wet lab infrastructure: a “biological gigafactory”. That’s exactly what we’re doing at Adaptyv. Over the past year we’ve grown our lab throughput by over 5x and onboarded more than 100 customers, ranging from bio AI labs like @chaidiscovery and @boltz_bio to pharmas like @Roche and @novonordisk to dozens and dozens of new startups that use AI to radically speed up drug discovery.

Collectivisation of judgement and execution to an ecosystem of parties as a means to dilute / obfuscate political responsibility (and eventually not carry out the job). Excellent work by @KHawickhorst

Contemporary European history only makes sense if we admit that our political elites fear and despise the people they represent. Only that presumption explains chat control, digital ID, free speech crackdown etc. Hard to see the democratic covenant holding up if our ruling class believes we’re a threat. A grim day.
🇪🇺 Chat Control has passed 😔 They can and will now legally scan any person's messages, emails and photos you send without a warrant The way they passed this law when the majority of the European Parliament was against it will shock you: They waited until most EP members were on holiday so only a few were present and then created an "urgent" vote for it to pass it through There's nothing democratic about any of it and big powerful forces are behind this that can manipulate the EU for whatever they want Democracy in Europe died a bit today 😔
