"You don't have to believe in the system to make it work for you"
Dr. Kandiyoti's argument was not that "you can make patriarchy work for YOU girl πππ#slay" like some twisted tradwife-girlboss hybrid.
It was that patriarchy retains power by allowing women short-term benefits in exchange for long-term enslavement, and that this is one of its most insidious and enduring weapons. Like a tyrannical government that starves you and then gives you extra rations in exchange for signing away your right to vote every year.
Of course, I suspect @NewStatesman writers know this. I strongly suspect this attempt to #girlbossify the patriarchal bargain through Sydney Sweeney is explicitly in the hopes that young women will be swayed into accepting substandard conditions while believing that they are the ones cleverly taking advantage of the system, as they actually play right into the system's hands and desires.
It's not a bad plan tbf to them, it's worked plenty of times before. Young women are always eager to believe they'll somehow be first generation to finally make the old rules work for them.
How did Sydney Sweeney, the 29-year-old American actress of fluctuating talent, accumulate an estimated fortune of $40m? By knowing a bargain when she sees one. Bargains, that is, of the patriarchal kind β the sort the Turkish feminist Deniz Kandiyoti theorised in 1988. Her argument was that women can negotiate with patriarchal structures, rather than simply submit to or resist them. They extract what advantages they can: protection, status, money. You do not have to believe in the system, Kandiyoti writes, to make it work for you. And Sweeney has figured this out, and is flapping her $100 bills directly in our scrunched-up, reddening faces.

Funny how the "innocent until proven guilty" brigade suddenly don't care about someone being found guilty. Funny how that works.

Beautiful. Must be depressing knowing youβll never find love like this.

The thing is, there are only two real explanations, nature or nurture, right? These people presumably don't want the baggage of saying "nature" because of the way that feeds into Andrew Tate-style worldviews about women, but they also don't want to grapple with the full implications of saying "nurture" π -- nurtured by who, within what type of cultural setting?
They know where those questions lead, so they'd rather shut the debate down entirely by screaming "puritan! puritan!" at you until you go away.
This is like being afraid of every guy named Jeff because of Jeffrey Dahmer.

I can't believe some people missed the point and think I meant itβs the same person.
My point is how easily Americans forget. In 2001, a terrorist named Abdul attacked America. Today, another Abdul is in the Senate. Americans just have a short memory.

Unfortunately, the chronically online leftists have built their entire political identity around feeling morally and intellectually superior to everyone else. Add ideological echo chambers and an inability to tolerate disagreement, and you get a pretty insufferable combination.

If she reports immediately, she's accused of trying to ruin a famous man's career.
If she waits, she's accused of inventing it years later.
If she tells nobody, she's accused of having no corroboration.
If she tells friends, she's accused of spreading rumours.
If she continues working in the same industry, she's accused of not being sufficiently traumatised.
If she leaves the industry, she's accused of being bitter about her failed career.
If she liked the man, she's accused of regretting consensual sex.
And if she disliked him, she's accused of having a grudge.
You CANNOT win.

If youβre wondering how hard it is to get a rape conviction, it took six women, all of whom
testified against him, to get the jury to believe he raped only one of them. Now imagine how hard it is when a woman on her own is trying to get justice against her rapist.
