The ABC's decision today to abolish its arts team arguably breaches the broadcaster's Charter. One of the ABC's legislated functions is to "encourage and promote the musical, dramatic and other performing arts in Australia." Very serious Qs need to be asked

The ABC’s decision to dissolve its standalone arts unit will see its two most senior dedicated arts journalists made redundant, and the end of an era for a distinct division. theage.com.au/culture/tv-and…

Angered the ABC will no longer have a State based 7pm Sunday TV news bulletin. A real blow to the coverage of State and local politics, news and sport. The Sydney stranglehold tightens. The ABC’s rich mosaic will become blander, less reflective of a big and diverse continent

The more one reads the ABC management/board justification of big changes the flakier they seem. EG: Used to be reporters who broke stories and worked hard were prized. Now we have the overwhelming sin of being “linear”, which has cost Andrew Probyn his political editor job.

We need a closer look at the circumstances that led to this decision. Labor restored a minuscule fraction of the $ that the previous govt stripped from the ABC. Indexation not enough to keep pace with inflation. Without adequate $ we'll see more decisions like this.

There's been no big increase in funding, a small restoration of funds lost from an indexation pause that in no way compensated for hundreds of millions stripped over 9 years.

Regardless of individual redundancy decisions, this is the inevitable consequence of years of cuts, not restored by Labor. Anderson announced a restructure & imminent redundancies after the budget when it was obvious there'd be no reprieve. Sad to see the ABC's slow destruction.

When I was a presenter for ABC 7.30 Report in Queensland every time we broadcast an indigenous related item the ABC switch ladies (pre-internet) would record a tirade of racist abuse (“nigger lovers” “boongs” etc). The racist underbelly remains in our polity in 2023.

The coming budget will set the scene for ABC funding for the next 5 years. We can’t wait another five years to repair the damage. We must act now to restore the ABC and protect its future. Sign the petition to restore and secure our ABC today! abcfriends.net.au/restorepet…

'Extraordinary amount of micromanaging Mark Feldstein, a veteran TV news journalist who is now a journalism professor at the University of Maryland, said he’s never seen an executive dictate the “narrative” of news coverage to the extent Lachlan Murdoch did with the Trump rally'
@FergusonNews has been thoroughly vindicated - ACMA's dodgy report looks even more threadbare. I hope there's an ABC follow-up story. @abc730 @abcnews

@jonaholmes48 @pjfmullins What has happened here illustrates significant problems with the way ACMA regulates media. The Four Corners program was strong public interest journalism about deep and disturbing allegations of the very opposite of that at Fox News. 1/2

Thank you Minister for your support of the ABC. The funding review you announced will be an important step in giving stability and confidence to the ABC and protecting it against arbitrary cuts and political interference. @meadea #auspol

Thanks for all the feeedback this week (yes, I do read it..) I find the calls not to have opposition pollies on the show just wild. They have a right to be heard, along with govt members, Greens, Independents etc. We live in a democracy. Anyway, thanks for watching! #auspol
