Back on this site very briefly to ask an honest question of any newsroom leaders that I know here: Would you punish a journalist in your org for saying, publicly, that federal agents should not kill American citizens peacefully exercising their 1A rights?

Follow-up: I’m curious how newsrooms distinguish this from other public statements reporters have been warned against in recent years including statements opposing attacks on the First Amendment, on minority groups, or on people exercising other constitutionally protected rights.

I should clarify that this is not a post related to any specific event or trend that I’m seeing up close. But I think it’s an important moment to reflect on and talk about journalistic norms that are rooted in a very different era.

It’s just the most embarrassing self-own when you’re going after research (likely by the VA) to help veterans with substance abuse.
Why do we need a Department of Government Efficiency? In 2020, the U.S. government spent $4.5 million to spray alcoholic rats with bobcat urine.

In an era of 1% phone response rates & opt-in Internet panels, we really don't need voters lying to polls to explain inaccuracy. Those who don't want to say who they are supporting just don't respond to polls at all.

Instead of interviewing randos in a diner, how about you do more stories preparing your audience for what to expect on election night and the following days when it comes to vote counts and certification. That would actually be helpful and informative.

Trump has constantly spoken the language of humiliation—saying of world leaders, “They’re laughing at us.” Harris turns this back on him, saying world leaders “laugh at you.” Trump responds by invoking the praise of Viktor Orban, the authoritarian ruler of Hungary.

Reluctantly signed up for Peacock while we were on vacation to watch the Olympics and was immediately impressed by the interface. At a time when so many companies seem to be struggling in that area, the folks at NBC knocked it out of the park.
Replying to @brianstelter
Key quote: "For the first time, I really feel like we've solved the conundrum of navigation. The audience is always like, 'I'm overwhelmed by the Summer Olympics. I can't find what I'm looking for.' I do think the interface and the dashboard of Peacock has really solved that."
