HEC Orients 34 Government Scholarship Recipients Ahead of Studies Abroad This evening, the Higher Education Council (HEC) organised a pre departure orientation for 34 government scholarship recipients and their parents and guardians ahead of their studies abroad. HEC Director General, Dr Edward Kadozi, urged the students to study hard, make the most of the opportunity and return to Rwanda to contribute to the country’s development. He emphasised that the government is investing in their education to build Rwanda’s human capital, not to facilitate brain drain. He noted that the return on this investment will be measured by the contribution they make to the country and its economy. The 34 students include 10 Bachelor’s, 16 Master’s and 8 PhD students who will pursue studies in key priority areas across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. A BRD representative also briefed the students on the government’s financial support, including the study loan scheme, and reminded them of their responsibility to repay the loan after completing their studies.

Food for Thought Inside Airport City: Rwanda's next big and most ambitious urban project. Airport City got its CEO today; but many would ask: what’s it even? Many people think the new Bugesera International Airport is just an airport. It isn't. It is the anchor of an entirely new economic city. Here's what makes Airport City unique: 1️⃣ Built around a world-class international airport Airport City is planned across Rilima, Juru, Nyamata, and Gashora to support the new Kigali International Airport. Rather than travelling to Kigali for every service, passengers, investors, airlines, and businesses will find hotels, healthcare, education, logistics, offices, and commercial facilities within the airport ecosystem itself. 2️⃣ A logistics and trade powerhouse With a 4,200-metre runway, the airport will initially handle 7 million passengers and 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Airport City will include cargo terminals, cold-chain warehouses, container facilities, freight forwarding centres, and logistics parks—particularly benefiting Rwanda's exports of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, dairy, meat, and other high-value products. 3️⃣ A tourism city beyond Kigali Bugesera's location offers more than proximity to Kigali. With nine lakes, three rivers, and growing conference and hospitality opportunities, Airport City is expected to become a destination for hotels, resorts, lakeside tourism, restaurants, water sports, birdwatching, and international events. 4️⃣ A city where agriculture meets innovation Few airport cities in the world integrate modern commercial agriculture into their long-term vision. Bugesera is expected to expand irrigated farming while connecting farmers directly to international markets through rapid air cargo, creating new opportunities for agribusiness and food exports. 5️⃣ A future hub for medical tourism The vision also includes specialised hospitals, advanced diagnostic centres, MRI and CT imaging, surgical services, maternal and child health, and other specialised healthcare—bringing world-class medical services closer to eastern Rwanda while attracting regional patients. 6️⃣ Industry next door Airport City will work hand in hand with the 335-hectare Bugesera Special Economic Zone, attracting industries in pharmaceuticals, agro-processing, manufacturing, packaging, textiles, and construction materials, with direct access to global markets through the airport. Perhaps the bigger picture is this: The world's most successful airports are no longer just places where planes land. They are engines of cities. If successfully implemented, Airport City could transform Bugesera from a district on Kigali's doorstep into one of East Africa's fastest-growing centres for aviation, business, tourism, innovation, and investment. The future of Bugesera may not just be an airport. It may be an entirely new city.
