The disease model of addiction arguably caused more harm than “chemical balance in the brain” or “born in the wrong body”. These simplistic explanations are liberating for the individual when they first hear about them but they’re damaging in the long run. Psychiatry’s arrogance causes long-term harm. Beware the simple explanation for complex human suffering.
Matthew Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, has told a new documentary about her brother’s life that his 2013 #Newsnight debate with Peter Hitchens was a “huge moment” in his decision to speak publicly about addiction and “show himself”. You can watch some of the debate here.

An unexpected victory for alchemists.
Last month, we demonstrated high-rate alchemy: turning mercury into real, stable gold, beating CERN’s record by a factor of 10. Last week, we enriched isotopes in the world’s most powerful plasma centrifuge, beating the Soviet record that stood for 40 years. Now, we’re building a fusion reactor in San Francisco to achieve record power density.

Somewhere in Belfast there is a man looking at this headline and desperately trying to work out how doing this advances the cause of Irish republicanism.

In news that will presumably shock no one the campaign behind this ad has been funded to the tune of about €1.3 million from the Irish State. gript.ie/campaign-behind-not…

After a long time I finally got around to writing something.

I would love to see Hillary Clinton's reaction when she sees this.

I don't like sponsored posts at the best of times, but allowing a sponsored post which directly lobbies the Government to release billions of euro in funding would seem to cross several ethical lines.

I have long wondered what the total percentage of people's income which goes towards the cost of tax and regulation is. Obviously different points for different people, but I wouldn't be surprised if the figure is over 70%.
Delehanty said a VAT bill of €16,000 every two months “should be my profit,” and that keeping even half of it would have let his company double in size: gript.ie/government-took-mos…

Obviously there's the income tax and VAT you pay, but you're also paying for the increased costs business have due to paying income tax for their own workers, unrecoverable VAT on inputs, BIK, the mandatory pension, and then tax on their profits, and those businesses are paying for all of that when they purpose goods or services from suppliers, so each item or service you buy is likely covering multiple layers of increased due to taxation.

Because there are votes to be won by delivering sports grants and there are not votes to be won, and indeed many to be lost as you'd have to break the unions, in fixing the healthcare system.
Anger in the air among government TDs. Not the children hospital, Not the shite state of the health system, Not immigration chaos, Not the housing catastrophe, No, who got announcements about sports grants... Christ on a bike...

To defend the politicians - they've correctly determined what Irish people actually care about and are optimising to deliver, or to be seen to be delivering, it. If people voted on the basis of actual policies they'd optimise to deliver those instead.

Even ENRON would have found this attempt at accounting shameless.
“Anthropic’s gross margins are above 80% before accounting for revenue shared with distribution partners, including Amazon, and the cost of training its models.” Wow.

I have always said that solutions to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem are much like buses.
We congratulate Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster on their remarkable mathematical work. We (the researchers and the agents) did not see any of their work through any means until they released it publicly — in particular, no specific user data was accessed in order to solve this problem. While unlikely, we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models. However, our proofs differ significantly and even the precise results proved are different in the Euler case (forced vs. unforced).
