The statue’s 1903 dedication speech refers to Black Americans as a “mongrel race” & boasts that nowhere in the South is a Black person “accorded social equality.” The monument says “unveiled with appropriate ceremony.”

PSS has been threatened with arrest several times by local police, who protect the monument - and the counter protesters. #solidarity #takeitdown #projectsaysomethingal #florencealabama #florenceal #visitflorenceal
This is my town. Please signal boost @indigo_girls today, and help us relocate this confederate monument! @solesides @TruthspeakerHQ @lyricsborn @blackalicious_ @djshadow
Please help racial justice nonprofit Project Say Something attract national press. The past 2 mo. (& counting) PSS has daily protests to relocate of a Confederate monument that sits outside the county courthouse to the city cemetery. #solidarity #takeitdown #projectsaysomethingal

Our Black community mobilized & used these protests to create a platform for the most sustained racial justice advocacy this area has ever seen, including performance art, “occupy downtown” rallies, teach-ins, sit-ins, and die-ins.

We are located in Florence, AL. The city owns the statue, but the county owns the land, and they are playing a political game of hot potato before elections. Neither will advance to move the monument.

Please help us to attract national press so that we can tell our story and pressure our local government to do the right thing: denounce white supremacy and move the statue.

White supremacists mobilized to stage rallies with Confederate flags. They have threatened our protesters with violence and even death. Some have even called for a resurgence of the KKK and planned “knight rides.” #solidarity #takeitdown #projectsaysomethingal #florencealabama
