Beyond Egypt’s fleet of E-2C Hawkeye 2000 AEW&C aircraft, the EAF operates an array of specialized airborne intelligence assets, working in tandem to build a clear electromagnetic picture of hostile activities.
A thread on Egypt’s elusive spy planes 🇪🇬 📡 🧵
Should of course note that Egypt operates an upgraded variant of E2C (Hawkeye 2000) and has potentially found a replacement in the Saab GlobalEye.
E-2D and Chinese options (KJ/ZDK) remain a possibility.
3 Tactical systems and Future Plans:
Areos and DB-110 reconnaissance pods allow Rafale and F-16 fighters to conduct long range high resolution surveillance missions all while benefitting from integrated and podded detection and jamming systems such as Rafale’s Spectra.
Two additional airframes returned from visits to Germany in the mid-2010s with additional dorsal antennas, suggesting further enhancements to their mission systems.
Another airframe features distinctive RC-12 guardrail/hockey-stick style antennas, a COMINT array and a ventral maritime-surveillance radar, demonstrating broad SIGINT capabilities.
The sensor suite was provided by Dalmo Victor and Northrop Grumman.
One variant features the AN/APS-94F side looking multi mode radar a FLIR pod and radar warning receivers combining surface surveillance with threat warning and electro-optical identification capabilities, this enables persistance surveillance of critical waterways.
2. BEECH 1900C/D: SIGINT-MMP
While some are familiar with the C-130 ELINT aircraft, fewer know that the EAF already established an airborne SIGINT capability through its Beech 1900, acquired between the 1980s and 90s
3 distinct special-mission configurations have been identified.
In January 2017, Sierra Nevada Corporation received a reported $727K contract for an Egyptian C-130 ELINT capability. Whether this represented a continuation of the original programme or a separate one remains unclear due to the lack of public information
C-130H: ELINT
In 2003, Egypt requested two roll-on/roll-off ELINT packages, including airborne signal-processing centres and analysis facilities, intended to help the EAF build and update hostile radar data this contract was valued at 60M USD.

Two days ago, RSF OWA drones struck Qadaref 🇸🇩, Khashm el-Girba and Setit Dam, reportedly from Ethiopia 🇪🇹. Recovered wreckage resembles UAE-origin 🇦🇪 drones designated TMID-0014 by OSMP. TDF fighters also recovered the same drones, confirming a possible Ethiopian launch point.
Egypt now possesses a completely indigenous layered air defense capability against drones and some subsonic targets extending out to 100 kilometers using the (yet to be revealed) FL2050, 50Km max interception range for smaller drones and up to 10Km for all other systems.
At the Alamein Air Show, it became apparent that this was a national project to boost Egypt’s indigenous air defense capabilities, with the private sector making an impressive entire into the C-UAS realm with interceptors offered by at least 4 private sector companies.
