Christmas always reminds me of when I got into hobby board games, although I was aware of games like catan and carcassonne, I didn’t realise a whole universe of hobby games existed.
Then a search for ‘a better version of monopoly’ took me to BGG and the rest was history!

Still confused on Gaza?
Does opposition genocide feel a bit too woke?

Hey @DiceTowerChris you went beast mode in this one 😜
But seriously, I feel your views are always very well structured and evidenced.
I have this one on preorder so feel I need to try it and see!
An age of barbaric european crimes in the Middle East as part of the crusades and beyond that a massive cultural exchange between the Islamic/Arab world and Christian European world.
One that layers neatly ontop of previous, historic exchanges.
Why do people like the medieval era?
Here are some answers.
-It's an age of heroism, where a small number of men skilled with the sword could decide the result of battles. 130 Normans conquered Sicily. Orders of battle list individual lords and their knights for a reason. Forces that numbered in double digits were decisive. Yes, there are exaggerations. But the military economy is geared towards producing highly skilled warriors in relatively small numbers.
-It's the age of faith, where the Catholic and Orthodox Churches were at the height of their influence. It's an age of saints and mystics. We get the Rosary, the Breviary, Gregorian Chant and multiple orders of monks and nuns from this time.
-The architecture continues to fascinate us. Castles and cathedrals are incredible achievements for an age following the collapse of Roman engineering.
-The stories are so rich and deep, with mythological significance for the Western world. Peter the Hermit finding the Holy Lance at Antioch. Charlemagne crowning himself in Rome on Christmas Day. The arrow through the eye of Harold the Saxon.
-In the popular imagination its an age of savagery, darkness and superstition. This only adds to the appeal. It's the basis of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and every other fantasy franchise we've been raised on.
-It's the time where basically every modern European nation was born: England, France, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and many other countries are medieval polities. Yes, there has been ruptures and discontinuity. But these nations remain.
-It's like a post-apocalyptic setting. The ruins of Rome lie all around, inhabited by successor states who remember the glory of the empire and self-consciously model themselves on the scraps of information they have preserved.
All of these features make it such a unique setting and one that will remain popular for many years to come.
What I want to see is more medieval stories and games that take the era on its own terms. This is what I'm trying to do with my next design.

Many euro games are described as "multi-player solitaire".
Mine is going to be the exact opposite.
Every faction can only achieve their most essential functions by using the workers and resources of other factions.
Extreme interdependence and asymmetry, that's the goal.
Well, I didn’t wanna spoil the suspense, but this is my no. 1 must buy board game right now 🤦🏾♂️

Wondrous Museum is my sleeper hit for 2025.
I was not expected to enjoy the game this much. It's Wingspan with one row
Universal, human values and principles are supposed to cut across all groups and political views- otherwise they are definitionally not universal.
One glaring downside of this game?
The iconography is highly cryptic and liberally applied.
Zenith (2p only) is one of the best games I’ve played in a long while. A delightful balance of complexity and depth, unflinching interaction, a clever blending of tactical card play and tug of war mechanics. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/…
