Microsoft released FY27 Q1 numbers. The #XBOX components of the quarterly numbers are nearly always summary level results, but we should go through them anyway. XBOX is part of the "Devices and Consumer" segment (renamed from "More Personal Computing"). Xbox Revenue: $5.4B - Microsoft split out several components of the business, de-emphasizing businesses such as Windows and Xbox. Xbox is now the 5th largest revenue driver in the company, out of 8. - In "Devices and Consumer," the company mentioned that operating expenses declined, driven by XBOX. This is unlikely to be savings from layoffs. Severance packages were continuing throughout the quarter. Instead, this would likely be related to contracts, purchases, suppliers, etc. - They also mentioned that amortized costs of of the ABK acquisition are now lower, which raises operating income. Remember, this is a non-cash number, but it is how the business calculates profitability in the accounting realm. ABK amortization costs will likely continue to decline over time. - XBOX content and services revenue (the core metric) declined 2% YoY (1% in constant currency), making it essentially flat to the previous year. Declines in game pass and third party are probably seasonal, but it's something to keep an eye one. Continued Game Pass decline is somewhat concerning to me. They highlighted increases in first party as a partial offset (likely Minecraft). - Xbox is predicting content and services growth to be up "mid to high single digits" in FY27 Q2. - Xbox YoY growth will likely be strongest in Q2. You can probably assume this is due to MW4 and GTAVI. Thoughts? The US summer months are often a softer period in the games industry, but XBOX does appear to be leveling off in terms of their performance decline. It's difficult to make any concrete statement about the business. They are in a transition period and the cost savings from restructuring is yet to kick in. We also can't make a definitive statement about any longer term plans, as it's still too early to tell. Again, too early to tell.

Quarters like this are going to further send signals to leadership that revenue consistency, and growth, comes from their reliable core franchises. When games such as Minecraft are the silver lining in a slow time period, you don't need to be an MBA to understand what kind of signal that sends (especially with how Roblox and Minecraft are capturing so much of the market right now). Minecraft, like Roblox, is a platform service (effectively).

I'll take a deeper look tonight, but here's my translation: The revenue decline is slowing, but obviously continued in a slightly negative direction. However, revenue isn't the bottom line and Sharma reports that accountability margin improved. While the devil is in the details, this can be translated into #XBOX being more profitable than the comparable period. Perhaps unsurprisingly, but Minecraft and WoW Forever are driving engagement in their respective domains. It's also generally accepted that Modern Warfare 4 is looking at healthy numbers and a significant improvement over BO7. Console? What else do we say? Xbox has struggled to deliver devices the entirety of this device "generation" (even when they were in higher demand). It hurt them in the long run and it appears that they understand it is an issue. Does this improve, especially under higher device COGS? I don't know.
In Q1, XBOX revenue declined 2% YoY, compared with a 10% decline a quarter ago, while our accountability margin improved. Minecraft and WoW Forever set records, Call of Duty had its most acclaimed release in more than a decade, and our PC platform revenue grew double digits. Console sales remain constrained by supply, with more demand than consoles available. We’re working to get more consoles into players’ hands, including through our expanded refurbishment program. We’re making progress, with a lot more work ahead.

One more note: PC platform revenue growth has been continually highlighted over the years. I assume this means sales via the XBOX PC app, but it's not entirely clear if this includes sales via Steam as well. Regardless, the numbers are the numbers. If they are looking at growth in PC, it matches up with their overall strategy for Xbox to effectively encompass Windows + Console.

XBOX's Scott Van Vliet responded to the feedback that reviewing games (on the platform) is too cumbersome, causing many to skip over it:
Reviewing a game on XBOX takes too many steps today. Press and creators should be able to redeem and play, and that's what the team is ultimately building toward. The first updates are coming soon.

Capcom released their H1 (6 mo) financials for year ending March 2027. Overall, an impressive H1 for the company, showing both revenue and profit increases YoY. Cash generation also increased as Digital Contents showcased their best operating cash H1 in some time. However, Capcom did NOT raise guidance for the year, prefering to stick to their current fiscal year plan. Digital Contents H1: - Net Sales: 851 - 100M yen (+71% YoY) - Operating Profit: 523 - 100M yen (+67% YoY) Company Op Cash H1: 368 - 100M (best cash H1 in many years) Digital Units PC: 21M Digital Units Console: 13M Onimusha: 1.7M+ units Note: #MonsterHunter Wilds did not see any updates on the top 10 best seller list, while MH World did receive a mention.

Capcom is on an impressive run at the moment, but it does come with increased cost, especially development. The company is currently at their higher employee count in their history, with approximately 3000+ listed as game developers. Expenditures continue to rise as they increase hiring. However, even with the increased headcount, Capcom continues to demonstrate one of the healthiest margins in the business of "AAA" gaming (especially considering they continue to develop what could be considered traditional type experiences). Obviously...for now. H1 Consolidated R&D: 273 - 100M yen. I believe that is that highest in company history.

Adding to this, I believe Monster Hunter Outlanders launches in two days. Capcom licensed it out, they are not developing it (directly).

I will get to Capcom's latest IR sometime today (hopefully). A couple items jumped out at me: 1) They didn't raise guidance. Perhaps they are just being cautious? It's also possible they see some softness in potential H2 results. Hard to say. 2) Operating cash flow was a big improvement YoY. Cash is king.

Every layoff article is exactly the same. I understand people are disgruntled, and upset, over the situation. I get that. I've been there. I have been in the room. However, every time someone talks with laid off employees, they all claim the secrecy is some big conspiracy to do...something? There is no conspiracy. This is how layoffs work because: 1) They are generally kept at the highest level until they come down. Section managers often don't even know until the last moment. Because of the privacy of the process, everyone keeps operating like nothing is happening. 2) The sudden conference calls, and / or private conversations are by design because that is the best way to do it. It needs to be with those individuals, direct, and by the book. Layoffs don't involve some grand ceremony where the company tells all your friends, and everyone sits around to discuss it. Stop with the conspiracy theory nonsense. You can be upset / angry / disappointed with a layoff, but there isn't something else going on. It's a layoff. Furthermore, if you're still at EA, and you don't like your job, go find another job. You are responsible for your own well being. If EA isn't supporting your needs, it is YOUR responsibility to find a job that works for you. verticalslice.news/ea-worker…

Koei Tecmo posted their FY26 Q2 (year ending March 2027). The entertainment segment posted better than expected YoY results. Consistent back catalog sales, along with strong performance in mobile, contributed to the company raising guidance for the year. Entertainment Revenue: 34,209M yen (up) Op Entertainment Profit: 11,467M yen (up) The entertainment forecast was slightly increased for the full FY26. They predict that sales will now come in slightly higher than FY25, but operating profit will be slightly under FY25. Console / PC Units moved in Q2: 2.4M units - It is important to remember that Koei Tecmo drives revenue primarily from mobile. - Labor costs are the highest in company history. Advertising and outsourcing costs are down. - Cash and deposits were down YoY, replaced by securities. Full Slide Deck: koeitecmo.co.jp/e/ir/docs/ir…

Microsoft isn't trying to get 60,000 people to voluntarily leave the company. There's years of industry data that predicts a certain percentage will probably take the offer, but the goal isn't 60,000. MSFT might be aiming for 2-10% to take it. However, no one on the outside truly knows their internal targets. It's not something crazy like 50%, or even 25%.

I know this won't happen, but I'd love it see it: The #CallofDuty MW4 devs should announce that they temporarily disabled SBMM in several playlists, but in reality, don't change anything. Let's watch community reaction to matchmaking when people simply believe that SBMM isn't active.

Call of Duty now claims $40B in lifetime revenue. As I said that other day, MW4 is the complete package when it comes to CoD. If they can fix the problems with DMZ, it will be even better.
One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40B in lifetime franchise revenue. An incredible milestone. Congrats to the Activision team. And to the players, thank you for being with us.
