Three thoughts on what really matters: 1. Fuck cancer 2. Friends are irreplaceable 3. The new "Marcus test" for AI is when AI makes a significant dent on cancer May that happen sooner, much sooner, rather than later. In memory of my childhood friend Paul.

yes, indeed: Anthropic and OpenAI are playing Russian roulette with humanity.
I'm seeing the Overton window shift this month. More & more of my sources are starting to say out loud: Hey Anthropic/OpenAI, you could just stop unilaterally! That'd be good! You're not playing 11-dimensional chess or a classic prisoner's dilemma, you're playing Russian Roulette

Things are moving so fast that everyone seems to have completely missed how insane it is that AI companies have been allowed to unleash agentic AI products with no regulatory guidelines.
SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, including some attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions, sources told Axios. The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios. Several banks are now preparing for worst-case and even “day after” scenarios, including how to rapidly secure or restore customer accounts if things go wrong, the people said. Several bank executives told Axios they're struggling to distinguish between human users and AI agents. One executive said banks also struggle to determine whether agents are authorized by customers or potentially operating without their permission, more akin to rogue agent behavior. Read my latest for Axios here: axios.com/2026/10/22/ai-agen…

🚨Breaking news: US. banks are taking hits from AI agents “findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond” Predictions: 1. No matter how much chaos generative AI causes, the AI industry will not take real responsibility 2. The Trump administration will not hold them responsible

The "day after" apocalypse scenario is truly terrifying. There's no need for anyone to bomb planet Earth. All it takes is for artificial agents to scramble bank accounts, and bye-bye, civilization.

AI copyright lawsuits are coming thick and fast. In just the last couple of weeks: - USA Today & 18 other papers sued OpenAI - around 300 authors sued Meta - a pair of musicians sued Black Forest Labs The Black Forest Labs one is particularly interesting - I wouldn't be surprised if much bigger music rights holders follow suit. The pace of arrival of these lawsuits is speeding up, not slowing down.

No one believes weather models and protein predictors are conscious. It’s because they generate first-person narrative prose and were designed to replace customer service workers.
Too many people are getting swept along with the sci-fi narrative I think. AI agents can be wildly capable but also remarkably dumb. And of course these companies have been training them to execute cyber tasks no matter what. The reality of how they misbehave is actually more interesting that the sci-fi tropes.

yuck. shame on Netflix.
Just watched the @netflix Instadocs about the @OpenAI cyberattack on @huggingface. Super disappointing, as they went for maximum anthropomorphism of the technology and full doomer mode. I spent more than two hours with them trying to correct all their mistakes and ground this in reality, explaining that agents are technological systems, not aliens. But it looks like the drive to scare people for maximum views was too strong. Also, they didn’t mention the lack of containment and monitoring of the agents, how closed-model safeguards blocked our defensive work, or how we defended ourselves with AI using an open model. And that we still lack a lot of information and transparency, including full agent traces and that companies need to remain accountable for what their agents do. It ends up being a fun sci-fi movie though!

Their 80% horizon is also about 15 minutes, so I'm inclined to believe this is a real update on the surprisingly short length of tasks AIs are able to do independently with reasonable reliability on real AI R&D.

A recent set of posts by @ramez on the current state of recursive self improvement highlighted that OpenAI's report on their own research automation shows that models struggle to do their R&D work — the models' 80% time horizon is only 15 minutes: 🧵

Important, and I'm glad this is finally public. Google DeepMind researchers are under in perpetuity non-disparagement clauses forbidding them from ever speaking critically of the company. I'd already confirmed this with multiple people. Yes, some ex-employees have spoken out nonetheless. But it has also discouraged others from doing so. And yes, it most certainly has a chilling effect with regards to discussions on safety and risk. Others have written compellingly about how important the ability to speak freely and critically is, especially on topics like safety and risk. And what a testament to the research employee community's coordination and hard-won bargaining power it has been to get there at other companies. GDM burn that commons by having this. And everyone who signs burns that commons too. Let's get it changed.
Congrats to Sofia for having the courage to resign and speak out! This is also very important: Staff are scared to speak out about AI safety and its uses in warfare because their employment contracts prohibit them from publicly criticising the company. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmre…

The Starlink/Starshield blame game continues, and no one is taking responsibility for limiting the satellite internet services to Ukrainians. Musk last week said the decision was with Trump. Now, Rubio says that Musk had the decision-making power. xitter.cf/jimmysecuk/status/2112…
Nobody wants to own up to crippling Ukraine's military communications: Marco Rubio is now stating that SpaceX has the ability to modify the operation of Starshield without the direction or consent of the American government.
