China has 1,800 fighter jets and roughly 500 J-20 stealth fighters. And it may still struggle to dominate Indian airspace.
On paper those numbers look intimidating. Ground reality tells a very different story.
IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh pointed out the factor that rarely makes it into the headline comparisons. The Tibetan Plateau.
Chinese air bases in Tibet sit at extreme altitude. The air at those airfields is much thinner. Thinner air drastically cuts a jet's payload and combat radius. That means Chinese fighters cannot take off with a full weapons load and full fuel. They launch with half the weapons and less fuel. Turnaround time between sorties also roughly doubles.
Now look at the other side of the border.
The Indian Air Force operates from low altitude plains bases like Ambala, Hasimara and Chabua. Jets taking off from those bases carry full fuel and maximum missiles. Response times are shorter. Strike cycles can run around the clock.
So the fleet that looks smaller on a spreadsheet can actually put more firepower in the air, more often, where it matters.
In 1962 the geography of the Himalayas gave China the edge. Today the same altitude has become the biggest choke point on Chinese air power.
Numbers matter in warfare. But geography remains the ultimate equalizer.

I cannot help but notice this pattern: people seeking to vilify Mao think that China today is far too powerful.
People who think well of Mao or have a balanced view of him, are proud of China’s achievements or are non-Chinese that see China as a force for the good in the world or neutral.
It’s very rare that I see someone who is pro-China but very anti-Mao. And it is almost never that I see someone who is pro-Mao but anti-China.
I daresay that Mao’s contemporaries probably had a more balanced view of him than people today. This is because they were more aware of the strength of his accomplishments in lifting China out of poverty. But also because China was not as strong then, so there is not so much need to malign Mao as a way of undermining China.
In any case, when it is your country that is beset with crisis, better a Mao than a Gorbachev, though Gorby might be a nicer guy.
