In December 2011, Hanifa Nakiryowa was attacked with acid while collecting her daughters from her estranged husbandโs home. Her young daughter was also injured.
Hanifa accused her estranged husband, @Makerere lecturer Dr Faisal Buyinza, of organising the attack an allegation that must be distinguished from a conviction.
Nearly 15 years later, the scars remain. But Hanifa turned her pain into purpose, founding CERESAV to support fellow acid-attack survivors.
Her strength deserves recognition, but so does the pursuit of justice.

People will read statistics like this and that other COVID-19 statistic we all remember because the numbers were so horrifying and still turn around and insist that the boy child is the one being left behind or that girls are receiving disproportionate attention.
UNICEFโs 2024 Uganda Country Profile estimates that 5.5 million girls and women living in Uganda were married before the age of 18, including approximately 1.6 million before the age of 15.

But my brother, a child is for both parents. Some respect should be maintained.
Besides, itโs not a favor to a woman to educate a child. Itโs both parentsโ duty and responsibility. Imagine being reminded to pay school fees, imagine refusing to pay the fees coz the mother stays with the child!
