Monkey Island titles were deliberately designed so you couldn’t die or get soft-locked. Ron Gilbert has talked about being frustrated by Sierra-style games that killed you for making the wrong choice. So the running reputation became: Guybrush is basically invincible.
In The Secret of Monkey Island, Guybrush boasts he can hold his breath for 10 minutes. If you actually wait that long after he’s thrown overboard with the idol, he drowns.
