Every provocation ends the same way: Dennis develops an involuntary erection. Robby notices—he notices everything that has to do with his "golden boy"—and laughs every single time. Dennis is always forced to dash off to the restroom, just like a teenager. "Ah, Sweet youth," Robby thinks, mentally tallying how many times Whitaker has fled his sight in response to his relentless, tactile teasing. Meanwhile, Dennis is constantly mortified. He’s no longer a teenager; he’s a full-grown adult. He shouldn’t be having reactions like this—especially not with his boss. But no matter how hard he tries to keep himself in check, it’s as if his brain and his dick are completely disconnected. Eventually, Dennis decides to seek his sweet revenge. Before heading home, he takes advantage of the shift-change chaos, grabbing a random medical chart so he has an excuse to walk by in a hurry. With so many people and hospital staff around, no one notices as Whitaker brushes past Robby. They also don’t notice Robby fighting the urge to place his hands on Whitaker’s waist—nor do they notice Whitaker’s ass rubbing, for two full seconds, against the crotch of the head of the emergency department. Dennis smiles triumphantly, while Robby feels as though his trousers are about to burst. Jack was right; at times, he was an insolent brat.

On a bulletin board, there were several posters of missing people: children, adults, women, and even the elderly. David, his older brother, had told him that many of them had run away from home, while others had likely fallen victim to heinous crimes. Regarding the first possibility, how could someone simply choose to vanish from the face of the earth? Wouldn't they miss their family? Young Dennis couldn't quite wrap his head around it. Now 27, Dennis waits for Trinity to emerge from the restroom at a similar service station, only to find himself facing another bulletin board, this time in Pennsylvania. He wonders: what are the chances that his own face might appear on a poster like this back in Nebraska? The answer terrifies him. "Huck? What's wrong?" Trinity asks as she reappears and steps up beside him, looking at the faces of the missing people from Pennsylvania. "It’s pretty terrifying, isn't it? I mean, thinking about why they disappeared." Dennis nods, his blue eyes fixed on the face of a young girl who bears a slight resemblance to Trinity. "I like to think that they escaped from terrible things and that they actually made it. That they’re living their lives in peace now, with people who love them," Trinity explains. "That they’re happy, wherever they might be." Dennis looks at Trinity; her expression is blank as she gazes at a picture of a blond boy, then she smiles and interlaces her fingers with his. "Let’s go home. It’s your turn to cook today." Her laughter rubs off on Dennis. As they get into the car, the restless feeling inside Dennis finally begins to subside. He doesn’t regret a single second of anything.
