Every time there's talk of an imminent #peacetreaty between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan, the dictatorship in Baku releases a newer, ever-more-absurd precondition.
🇦🇿🇦🇲 “The Azerbaijani people expect an apology from Armenian society,” said Presidential Aide Hikmat Hajiyev. He stressed that Armenia must respect internationally recognized borders and abandon revanchist ambitions in favor of lasting peace.

"Azerbaijan demands Armenian apology as presidential adviser questions durability of peace agreement". Did I mention that the Aliyev regime is struggling to find a pretext for a new escalation of tensions?
Azerbaijan demands Armenian apology as presidential adviser questions durability of peace agreement --- BAKU – Azerbaijani presidential adviser Hikmet Hajiyev has called on Armenia and Armenian society to apologize to Azerbaijanis displaced during the conflict, introducing another contentious demand into the ongoing peace process. Speaking on October 26, Hajiyev said Armenia should apologize to Azerbaijanis who have been unable to return to their former homes for approximately three decades. He maintained that Azerbaijan was not seeking revenge but insisted that additional steps were necessary to establish lasting peace. Hajiyev also warned that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan could be signed yet remain little more than a document unless it produced tangible results. The remarks come as Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government continues to prioritize the formal signing of a peace treaty with Baku. Despite Yerevan’s stated readiness to move forward, Azerbaijan continues to raise demands, including constitutional changes in Armenia. Hajiyev’s latest comments add to concerns about the increasingly asymmetric expectations surrounding negotiations, particularly in the absence of comparable commitments toward the rights and safe return of Armenians forcibly displaced from Artsakh in 2023. For Armenia, the central question remains whether the peace process can establish reciprocal obligations and durable security guarantees, rather than becoming a framework through which Baku continues to introduce new conditions. The latest Azerbaijani statements are likely to intensify domestic scrutiny of the Armenian government’s negotiating strategy and its ability to safeguard national interests.

According to Academia.edu, UNESCO Deputy Director Hosagrahar’s special interest is “early Christian art,” yet she pretends ignorance of Azerbaijan’s destruction of such churches & art in Artsakh.
UNESCO World Heritage Centre Deputy Director Jyoti Hosagrahar said she cannot comment on the cases of destruction of Armenian churches, as she is not aware of them.

UNESCO Heritage Deputy Chief “Not Aware” of Azerbaijan Destroying Armenian Churches in Occupied Artsakh ➖➖➖ UNESCO World Heritage Centre Deputy Director Jyoti Hosagrahar told NEWSam in Yerevan that she could not comment on the destruction of Armenian churches in Occupied Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) because she was “not aware” of it. When the reporter raised reports of vandalism, she said she had to go. NEWSam spoke to Hosagrahar at an international meeting on nature and culture at the Matenadaran, Armenia’s institute of ancient manuscripts. Yerevan is hosting COP17, the UN Biodiversity Conference, from October 19 to 30, and UNESCO co-convened the conference’s Nature and Culture Summit. On October 25, Hosagrahar spoke at the Matenadaran at a high-level event of the international working group on nature and culture, held within the framework of COP17. In her speech, she said Armenia has a rich historical, cultural and natural heritage, Aravot reported. The reporter told Hosagrahar that Armenian society is concerned about the conservation of Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh because of the many reports that churches there are being destroyed, and asked how UNESCO is responding. “I cannot comment on churches being destroyed because I’m not aware of what churches are being destroyed,” Hosagrahar said, smiling, a glass of white wine in hand. When the reporter said there are many reports of acts of vandalism, Hosagrahar closed her eyes and showed visible discomfort. “Sorry, I have to go,” she said. Satellite imagery in April 2026 confirmed that Azerbaijan had razed the Holy Mother of God Cathedral in Stepanakert, the largest Armenian cathedral in Artsakh. The Armenian Apostolic Church consecrated the cathedral in 2019 after nearly 13 years of construction. Azerbaijan’s government-controlled Islamic religious body defended the demolition. It claimed Azerbaijani authorities had “both legal and moral grounds” and said tearing down the building “cannot be considered a destruction of religious or cultural heritage.” The building it tore down was a consecrated Armenian cathedral. The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin condemned the demolitions as “state-level vandalism” meant to “erase the Armenian trace from Artsakh.” Azerbaijan’s September 2023 ethnic cleansing of Artsakh forcibly displaced 120,000 Armenians, including the Armenian population of Stepanakert. Azerbaijan continues to unlawfully hold Armenian hostages in Baku. After sham trials, Azerbaijani courts sentenced former Artsakh leaders and officials Arayik Harutyunyan, Davit Babayan, Davit Ishkhanyan, Levon Mnatsakanyan and Davit Manukyan to life in prison, and Arkadi Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan and Ruben Vardanyan to 20 years each. UNESCO has received reports of the destruction. In October 2024, Krista Pikkat, Director of UNESCO’s Culture and Emergencies Entity, told Armenpress, “We have received reports from all different concerned parties about the alleged destruction.” She said UNESCO “has been monitoring the situation with concern.” UNESCO tried to send a technical mission to Artsakh in 2020. In December 2020, UNESCO said it was waiting only on Azerbaijan’s response, having approached Azerbaijani authorities “several times without success.” The mission never took place. In 2021, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Azerbaijan to prevent and punish vandalism and desecration of Armenian cultural heritage, including churches. Azerbaijan razed the Stepanakert cathedral more than 4 years later.

The reason Erdoğan dismissed his adviser at Aliyev’s demand is clear. Those familiar with the Aliyev family’s history will recognize the same tactics: Heydar Aliyev used them against Leningrad Communist Party leader Romanov and Uzbek Communist Party leader Sharaf Rashidov. The scheme is simple: draw people into a corruption network, then use their involvement to blackmail them when the moment comes. The Aliyev family has long used corruption as a political tool, including in the post-Soviet period. Many high-ranking Western politicians and diplomats, as well as institutions such as the Council of Europe, have also been caught in this trap. Those who engage in corrupt dealings with the Aliyevs pay sooner or later. Once you are in, you never out. The only way to stay out of it is to refuse, despite lucrative offers and intimidation, to make deals with them. Yet, over my lifetime, I’ve come to agree with the famous saying: “History teaches us one thing: that it teaches us nothing.”

Jared Kushner does not have any security clearances. So his claim about divulging classified information, would mean he is admitting to illegal access of classified information….
Jared Kushner’s attorneys at Clare Locke have sent Vanity Fair a formal demand letter disputing the story and demanding its removal. It can be very difficult for current and former intelligence customers to pursue defamation cases, not because they face a different legal standard, but because proving their case may require classified evidence they are not authorized to disclose. I’m not making a prediction about whether Kushner will or won’t file suit…just pointing out that it’s more challenging for him than for most.

Good write-up here of the Cole/Kushner saga. Moving the book’s publication date up two days doesn’t scream “fear of litigation” to me.

If people dislike Elon Musk so much, why do they still use the platform he owns?

Tonight in Hebron and throughout the West Bank, residents—including women and children—were evacuated from their homes. This is not what a war to eradicate terror looks like. This is what terror looks like.

Elina Balasanyan, a young mother forcibly displaced from Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, is rebuilding her life in Saratovka, a village in northern Armenia. She raises chickens and grows vegetables, drawing on the food traditions and farming knowledge she grew up with. She also challenges expectations that women should be confined to domestic roles and joins local efforts to oppose a proposed mine near Urasar.
