Pat Benatar working the edge of the stage, mic in hand and a sea of raised arms behind her, in the years when her voice was blasting out of every rock station in America.
Born Patricia Andrzejewski and raised on Long Island, she trained as a coloratura and had her eye on Juilliard before rock and roll pulled her another way. An amateur night at Catch a Rising Star in New York in the mid '70s earned her a manager and a regular spot at the club, and Chrysalis signed her soon after. Her debut, In the Heat of the Night, arrived in 1979 with Heartbreaker, and Crimes of Passion followed in 1980 with Hit Me with Your Best Shot, climbing to No. 2 and staying on the US album chart for 93 weeks. Her cover of You Better Run became the second video ever played on MTV. She went on to win four Grammys, married her guitarist and songwriting partner Neil Giraldo in 1982, and the two were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
🎸 Pat Benatar's voice was trained for opera before it was trained for arenas. Did you ever get to see her live? 🎸

Ah, Brigitte Bardot; there she sits, radiating such devastating French insouciance that the camera itself looks faintly ashamed, as if it’s just been caught trying to keep up with a woman who’s already three existential crises ahead of the entire decade.

Susan Saint James, the Emmy-winning actress who starred opposite Rock Hudson in “McMillan & Wife” and Jane Curtin in the CBS sitcom “Kate & Allie,” died Monday at 80 years old after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Saint James’ family described her as someone “generous with her time and energy, which she valued more than money, and instinctively drawn to whoever needed lifting up. She taught her children to pause, be kind and look out for other people. She never met a stranger. Every person she met became the most important person in the room at that moment, from a fellow board member to the clerk at the shoe store, who usually walked away knowing her entire life story.” (via People)
