From this alone you can see how many intercity services use the West Coast Mainline to the detriment of regional services around the West Midlands. Putting those on HS2 gives Birmingham a ready-made S-Bahn, but only if the gov invest in more frequent WM services. @RichParkerLab

Every civilisation on earth wrote its founding story about a cow. Egypt gave the sky to Hathor, a cow, and the pharaoh drank from her udder to become king. Sumer sent the Bull of Heaven against its first hero, and killing it was the deed that made him one. Crete built a palace around a bull and put a labyrinth under it. The Vedas wrote the word for war as the search for cows. Greece named a continent after a girl carried off by Zeus in the shape of a bull, sent Heracles to steal the cattle of Geryon, and drowned Odysseus's crew for eating the cattle of the sun. Ireland wrote its national epic about a war over one bull and called it exactly that. The Cattle Raid of Cooley. The Norse began the universe with Auðumbla, a cow, licking the first god out of a block of salted ice. The Zulu, the Maasai, the Nuer and the Fulani each hold that God gave the first cattle to them alone, and each has gone to war on the point. Five thousand years, every continent, one animal at the root of the story. Nobody sacked a city for a courgette. No god came to a mortal as a chickpea. No epic was ever sung about a lentil. The animal every people on earth put at the beginning of everything is the one your dietitian calls optional.

A masterclass in applying humour to real life situations
Public health nutritionist, on secondment to the Mongol army. Hungary, 1241. Nutritionist: I've been through your food diary. There are no vegetables in it. Rider: There are no vegetables on a horse. Nutritionist: No grains either. No bread, no pulses. Where do you get your energy? Rider: Lately, from Poland. Nutritionist: I mean your carbohydrates. Rider: I do not know this word. Nutritionist: What did you eat yesterday? Rider: Mutton. Mare's milk. Dried curd. Nutritionist: And the day before? Rider: We rode 60 miles. I ate in the saddle. Dried meat. Milk. Nutritionist: That is a great deal of saturated fat. Rider: Thank you. Nutritionist: It wasn't a compliment. I'd like to see half your plate made up of plants. Rider: I have no plate. Nutritionist: The people you've conquered eat a very balanced diet. Wheat, millet, lentils, greens. Rider: Yes. We noticed. Nutritionist: I'm only thinking of your long-term health. Rider: I have ridden here from Karakorum. How did you arrive? Nutritionist: ...There was a coach. Rider: You should eat more mutton.
