When did we abandon the notion that the antidote to harmful speech is more speech? Counter that with which you disagree with speech that celebrates truth, reason, logic, and evidence. Censorship is disgraceful. Dialectic is critical. Ideas deserve discussion. #FollowTheSilence

If you read one thing today, make sure it is this:
In a stunning piece published by the head of one of Israel's most prominent think tanks, Maj. Gen. Tamir Hayman describes the reality of Israel's new security doctrine:
A few crucial principles he describes:
1. The United States is a “declining power” and, given its ongoing social and political shifts, will soon abandon Israel in any event. This is compelling Israel to move toward greater self-reliance in order to avoid "excessive dependence" on the US since it "exposes Israel to the influence of a progressive American value system that is incompatible with Israel's Jewish character."
Then he concludes: "Severing ties with the United States is therefore not only inevitable, but essential to Israel’s independence and the resilience of its Jewish national identity."

Ripping on cruises is a time-honored tradition, and all the criticisms people make against them are basically true, but somehow, everyone who does this just kind of ends up telling on themselves.
A cruise is a middlebrow vacation. You hang out on a ship. It stops in some places that are nominally different destinations, but they’re all cruise ports and are all kind of the same. You look at the ocean. You go to the pool. You play blackjack. You read a book. There is a lot of food that is generally decent but not great, and there is a lot of alcohol.
It’s fundamentally similar to any other vacation that mostly centers around eating and drinking a lot — Resorts, Vegas, Disney, whatever. Let’s be honest, when most people vacation in Europe or Japan, they mostly just eat and drink.
The two most famous examples of the “looking down my nose at cruises” essay are David Foster Wallace’s “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again” and Gary Shteyngart’s “Crying Myself to Sleep on the Biggest Cruise Ship Ever.”
When I read DFW’s essay the first time, I was in my early 20s and he was still alive. It seemed like they had sent the coolest guy in the world to a decidedly uncool place, and his jarring presence within it laid bare all its defects.
When I read it the second time, I was in my thirties, and he had killed himself to escape the unbearable torture of living in his own head, and it seemed like a story about a guy who went to a place with unlimited bourbon and ice cream and managed to find a way to be miserable.
Shteyngart’s essay, I always felt, took an obvious and banal observation — the upgraded version of this kind of vacation has serious diminishing marginal returns — and tried to stretch it into a comedic premise for a 20 page essay.
One big knock against the cruise industry is that they try to upsell you on a bunch of expensive stuff that isn’t very good. You can pay $3-5000 for a cruise with a basic room with a window, or you can pay $25,000 to go on the same cruise in the deluxe suite, which is what the Atlantic booked for Shteyngart.
But once you leave your suite, you’re on the same ship with the same bars and the same pool and the same activities, and when you get off the ship, you’re still in the same port, wandering around and looking at the same shops or going on the same excursion. So you’ve really paid ten times as much for what is substantially the same vacation. So the essay was basically Shteyngart doing all this and then being like: “Can you believe this shit is happening on a $25,000 vacation?”
Granted, nobody should spend $25,000 to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but it’s a lot more competitive among the $5000 vacation options, and once you recognize that the essay is basically contrived by booking the $25,000 suite everyone knows is a poor value and then bitching about it, the premise of the essay starts to seem like it’s actually: “I am too good for this $5000 vacation.”
And really, what it comes down to is that, when you are a relatively virtuous person who leads a responsible but ordinary life and you’re not that cool or interesting and you find yourself old and somewhat affluent, going on cruises is the kind of thing you do to enjoy your disposable wealth. And so people with main-character syndrome find it horrifying to be confined in such a middlebrow normie space — it’s their worst nightmare come true; crowding into an elevator to go wait in line for the buffet with all the sheeple.
Anyway, I have not watched the Lindsay Ellis video, but even though she may correctly be repeating the tired observation that cruise ships are not very cool, she is clearly incorrect in her belief that she is too cool for it, because she is not cool at all.
Eat your ice cream, drink your bourbon and shut the fuck up.
Yes.
It makes me a little sad that somehow @mtaibbi might be lumped in with @billmaher and @bariweiss (both obvious charlatans) but perhaps it's true. Otherwise just a great tweet.
If you mean @mtaibbi, @bariweiss, or @billmaher,, then name them and fight it out with them. I will bring cheddar popcorn.
But don’t use “free speech warriors” and the “anti-cancel culture brigade” as broad terms of derision and then act surprised when actual free speech advocates push back.
Some of the best people I have ever met in my life are people at FIRE, or people I’ve met through FIRE, from all across the political spectrum. They have spent years defending people they disagree with, often intensely, because they actually believe in the principle. They fought censorship and cancel culture when it came from the left, and they fight it now when it comes from the right.
And they absolutely get caught in the blowback from this kind of dismissiveness . There is a very common habit of trying to score points against your political enemies by implying that “free speech people” are all hypocrites—that nobody really believes in this stuff, everybody is secretly partisan, and consistency is a fraud.
I’m tired of that cynicism. I’ve spent most of my adult life around people who prove it wrong every day.
So don’t casually smear an entire community of people doing difficult and genuinely admirable work. If you mean, other people name them, and they will get a chance to defend themselves.
Consistent defenders of free speech exist. A lot of them are my friends and colleagues. And they deserve better than the constant eye-roll assumption that everyone is as cynical as their critics.

FIRE won a huge First Amendment victory today.
And before anyone mischaracterizes it: This ruling does NOT say the government must admit anyone, issue anyone a visa, or grant anyone citizenship.
It says that once a person is lawfully here, the government cannot deport them because they engaged in protected speech.
The government cannot tell a legal immigrant: An American is free to say this, but if you say it, you’re out.
That’s the principle we sued to defend. And today we won.

Woke." It destroyed or distorted or deranged lives, careers, relationships, professions, academic fields, businesses, media, the arts -- and now its disfavored proponents would like to say: Sorry, wow, we overplayed that.
Thus the perpetrators come forth robed as their own judges.
They are rather lenient with themselves, of course. They have sentenced themselves to -- doing better next time! And they believe, truly, that they deserve the chance. Have they not won our trust by acknowledging they lost it? And admitting that they, in their haste or their excitement, perhaps deserved to lose it? For a time? A time which they hope is over now, just as it was getting started.
As for those who judged them harshly and long ago, the ex-woke admit these people had a point -- but they made it prematurely, on poor evidence, well before the suspects had confessed. Which smacks of intolerance. Of prejudice. But the ex-woke feel generous now, conciliatory, and they will let this uglyness pass.
For all their faults -- and see, they have them! Look! -- they're finally a conscientious bunch. It might take time, but they police themselves. Now that's a mafia you can trust! A self-correcting, self-debugging gang! And isn't that so much better than the alternative? A cartel you have to fight?
See what trouble we're saving you?they say. All you had to do was show some patience. You might even want to be grateful to us now. For our humility, belated as it may be. (It's hard to stop a train.) And as for the casualties of our excessive phase...
Well, enjoy a moment of quasi- victory. Here, as the gift of your gracious persecutors who now stand guilty by our own judgment, we offer you, our victims, a peace medallion of shining symbolic gold-toned plastic, totally yours to keep.
So please accept the terms of our marginal, fractional surrender and our bestowal on you of semi-respect. We think you should. Because you can be sure we'll remember if you don't--and you know what we're capable of.
This thing's not over yet.

It's actually shocking to hear one of the nation's most bloodthirsty neocons -- Robert Kagan, the husband of Victoria Nuland and partner of Bill Kristol in pushing the Iraq War long before 9/11 -- admit not only that the US is often attacked as "blowback" from its own aggression, but that both Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are examples of it.
This has long been one of the most taboo truths when it comes to US war propaganda, and still is:👇

These increasingly dire warnings about how the US has largely depleted its anti-missile defense systems and even offensive weapons like these have been circulating in DC for 18 months at least.
The US gave them to Ukraine and Israel, and used them against Yemen and Iran, and to protect Israel and Persian Gulf dictatorships.
The US spends more on its military than any other country *by far.* And yet the Pentagon hasn't been able to pass an audit in many years, and doesn't have the weapons needed to fight a protracted war against Iran, to say nothing of doing something like defending Taiwan.
One can debate if that's a good or bad thing -- that's a separate question -- but the corruption and waste of US taxpayer money to fill the pockets of Boeing, Raytheon and Palantir is virtually unlimiated.

Some real bangers in this decision:
"The Act does not limit (and does not purport to limit) actual discrimination of any kind. It instead assumes that mere exposure to what the State views as the wrong viewpoint is itself a serious harm. But a difference of opinion is not discrimination."
"As between allowing a state to tamp down discussion of disfavored viewpoints on the one hand, and allowing free debate about those topics on the other, which do we think is more consistent with the founding generation’s commitment to the freedom of speech? The question answers itself."
VICTORY! A federal appeals court rejected Florida’s “Stop WOKE Act” — a broad ban on what public university faculty may discuss in class — holding it violates the First Amendment.
“Though the government has plenty of ways to promote its own viewpoint, puppeteering every university professor in the state is not one of them. Forcing an official government line—in a college classroom of all places—is exactly the ‘pall of orthodoxy’ the First Amendment will not tolerate.”
